OPK questions

Hi ladies!  It has been a while since I've posted on GP, but I'm back because I have a few questions about TTC and using OPKs. Earlier this month I had a Mirena IUD removed. I don't really have a good sense of what my cycles are like at this point since I didn't really get AF with the IUD. I think I should be ovulating soon though. I got some cheap OPKs and I have been testing 1-2 times per day. So far no positives and the line isn't even really getting darker. The last time I used OPKs I noticed that they got darker until I got a positive result.  I believe that I read that this phenomenon doesn't always happen, but I wasn't sure if it doesn't happen for every woman OR if it is variable month to month.

I was also wondering what time I should be testing. I was planning on doing twice per day once I get EWCM, but CM has been kind of throwing me for a loop. In your experience is it better to do second morning urine or later in the day? Does it really matter?

I do know that temping could probably help me get a clearer idea of what is going on, but I'm not really interested in temping just yet. For now I'm just going to wait and see.

Thanks for your help :)

Re: OPK questions

  • I've never had EWCM, so can't really help there. Before I bought my CBFM, which tells me exactly when to test and reads it for me, I just went by the calendar based on the average length of my cycle. I've always been super regular though on or off BCP's. I know you're not interested yet, but I think temping is probably gonna give you the best answer. GL either way!

  • I always did FMU the handful of times I used OPKs. Testing with SMU or later in the day was just completely unfeasible for me (it would mean testing at work or not drinking a lot of water so I could actually hold my pee for more than a couple of hours to test when I got home at 6 at night). I did get a little bit of a fade-in, but I don't think I ever used them for more than a few days before O, and a couple of times only used them when I had obvious EWCM, at which point, they were a definite + right away.

GL; I hope you get a handle on using them, and I agree with FutureMrsWright to start temping as soon as you think you might be ready, because that definitely gives the clearest overall picture.

  • Thanks. Part of me is wondering if I'm actually ovulating. I have a feeling that I might not be, but I'm hoping my gut is wrong. We shall see. I will probably give it 6 months or so before I start temping. At this point there is nothing I would do differently if I were to find out that I'm not ovulating. It is what it is I guess.

  • Like lucky I also used FMU, one because it's convenient and two because that was what my RE recommended. If it looked close I'd test later the same day and/or evening.
I often got a fade in pattern but I know that's not the case for everyone. Good luck.

Also, if your not ovulating you may still get +OPK's. The only way to really confirm is tempting or b/w but if it won't change anything than I wouldn't worry too much but I would want to know.
