Buddy Reads: Horns by Joe Hill (sp for entire book)

@Hoycie - I know I'm tagging you but only read beyond this line if you have finished the book.

I just finished Horns for my buddy read. My full review is on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/822874283
(I have no idea if that link will work.)

I rated this book three stars. I really enjoyed it in the beginning. It was funny and twisted and a mystery and I was pretty hooked. It was interesting throughout the remainder of the book but as each part began it felt like a different book. I did enjoy it though but kind of wish Ig was able to clear his name to the people in the town somehow. Not a happily ever after, but some way for them to realize the truth, that a man the town loved and idolized had actually committed the crimes and let his best friend take the fall.

What did you think Hoycie? Or anyone else who has read this?

  • I'm bummed that the second half didn't live up to the first for you! It was a 4 star book for me.

I am too. :( I still enjoyed the second half but not nearly as much as the first.

  • This is my favorite Joe Hill book. I loved this one. I loved the whole "can people really hide a side of themselves?"  I love that Ig was a nice person but everyone saw him as evil so he became so.... but here is the friend (sorry can't remember names as I read it a while ago) and he really IS EVIL and people see him as this nice guy.

For me it touched on all those new stories when something bad happens, and the neighbor's always like "he was the nicest person" Really? You couldn't tell at all that he was a psycho? It intrigues me that people can hide those sides of themselves so well.

I totally agree with this. I remember thinking this while I was reading and wondering, how well do I really know the people around me? It kind of makes you want to look over your shoulder a bit.

Joe and his dad write mentally disturbed people so well.  I love that you can almost sympathize with them.  You start to get soft on them and then have to step back and remember, wait! He just smothered his mom with a pillow!

  • ITA with everything June and SnShne said.  I loved this book so much, and I'm bummed that the second half didn't live up to the first for you.  I found the whole thing fascinating and just the right mix of creepy and funny and sweet.  I gave it 5 stars.
  • I totally agree about Lee! His character was my favorite and I feel that he was really well-written. I think I just was expecting more of a mystery or something. The backstory was interesting but I kept wanting to know what Ig was going to do. I did like reading about everything from Lee's perspective though.

  • @booknerd226- I FINALLY FINISHED!!

I liked it but the second half of the book didn't make me as eager to read. I was telling @myjunegirls that Lee and Ig reminded me of Matt Damon and Leo D in the DePAted (read in Boston accent).  Ig was the "bad guy" but even as the devil he still had a conscience and then there was Lee who was such an awful human being.

I, also, hate that Ig's name wasn't cleared.  However, if he was ok with it then I guess I can be too.

  • Hill is an amazing writer. He's so descriptive and it isn't so much where my ADD kicks in.
He knows how to develop characters well and I suppose the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
