Name Change - Driver's License

So I just downloaded the appropriate form from PennDot, but I'm not sure if I need to include any official documentation.  If I'm reading it correctly, then there is no need to include anything with the form as I'm using my spouse's surname.  This seems to easy.

Also - my current driver's license will expire in September.  Would it be easier/harder/no difference to wait until then?

Re: Name Change - Driver's License

  • I would probably wait until your current expires.  I loathe the DMV so I'd avoid twice if I could!

When I changed my name on my license, I brought a copy of my marriage certificate and my new social security card.  I think all I need was the SS card for the license, and the marriage cert for the new SS card.

  • I changed my SS card nearly 3 years ago, right after we got married, but that was as far as I got.  Thought it might be nice to 'surprise' him with a refreshed DL on VDay since it's kind of a sore point between the two of us.

Will they issue me a new card if I go to the DMV, or just a paper name change document to keep with my DL until it exprires in September?

  • I am of zero assistance on this, as I did not change my name.

I think it's funny though, since I still get questions of, "Well, what's your married name, then?"  Um, it's the same name that I had before I got married.
