The Supreme Court is wrestling with the appropriate role for religion in government in a case involving prayers at the start of a New York town's council meetings.

  • Isn't that same government putting prayer rooms in public buildings for Islam ?
  • I don't think that the townships should be able to create a policy REQUIRING meetings start with an invocation or prayer. As a believer in God and Christian I would certainly hope that the people in leadership would be filtering their decisions through the lens of their faith anyway. However, I also wouldn't want it banned that you might begin your words with prayer . I highly doubt that someone in attendance is going to have life trauma from hearing words that reflect your faith as you begin to speak. Maybe someone might be uncomfortable but we aren't promised a life without discomfort from time to time. I get uncomfortable when I hear someone talking about the person they are shacking up with or their 8 kids with 5 different daddies. While it's not my choice, they have a right to theirs and provided they meet the criteria to speak in the public forum (submitted request in timely fashion, followed rules of order for the meeting, etc) then they should be able to speak about whatever they wish.

It's time to get back to common sense.

  • I also wanted to add that the word "endorsement" is comical. I mean if you go into the government offices and they have a coke machine, does that mean they endorse Coke over Pepsi? If they let Jones Car dealership sponsor the football field and put signage up, does that mean they are endorsing that dealership over other dealerships in town? How far does the word "endorsement" really go in our society anyway? It's like they think that there is this fragile segment of our society that is suddenly going to abandon their entire belief system and take up Christianity because it's the official sponsor of Greece town meetings. Puhleeze.

    Where?
  • Every public building here is required to set aside a Prayer room. My company also has prayer rooms available for all Islam staff.
My husband asked if there were Christan prayer rooms and he was very nearly charged with a human rights complaint.

Where do you live? Do you work for the U.S. government?
  • An Ontario Power Utility that reports to a very politically correct government.

If one group has a special space for religious practice, than any group who wants a room too for religious use should be given one (to be fair). Also, "Islam staff" is not a correct usage of the term. It should be "Islamic staff" or "Muslim staff members." Islam is the religion, adherents to this faith are called Muslims.
