Any ideas on how to spruce this baby up?!

My husband built this chair (also known as "The Toe-Killer" due to its protruding front feet) with his father when he was a child. He is incredibly attached to it and is not willing to part with it. I have been covering the cushions with a sheet to make it less of an eyesore. It has 4 thin cushions, two as the seat and two as the back rest. It is incredibly awkward to sit in, causing one to sit in a fully reclined position. Additionally, my dogs use it a a stepping stool to look out the front window anytime they hear a car pull into the driveway, leaving the cushions and sheet in disarray. Any ideas on how I can spruce this baby up?
