Buddy read: Vampire Academy. Spoilers through page 100

So what do you think so far of Vampire Academy?  I'm unimpressed.  Lissa seems mostly spineless - and there has to be more to the car crash that killed her family.  And Rose is angry just for the sake of being angry.  I'm also still trying to sort out the three different races of characters (and humans, of course).

  • I feel the same. I'm trying to figure out what the hype is about, honestly. It's confusing to keep track of the different races and their roles, like the guardians and all. And who can marry who and have who's babies...haha.

  • I didn't really get into it until the end of the first book and by the third book I was totally hooked on the series. It did start pretty slooooooow for me though.

  • Well then, we need to finish it.  @Tootermi, when should we have the next 100 pages done by?   Next Monday?  Sooner? Later?
  • This series definitely got better for me as it went on. I didn't love the first book but if you stick with the series, it is great!

That's good to know.  At least it isn't like some other series, which start out great and then fade away.
  • I really liked this whole series, I honestly don't remember my specific feelings about the first book but I can see where you're coming from with the confusion.  I think my standards were probably lower than other books because I was thinking them as just sort of fluff.

  • I agree with pp.  These are really fun books, and I hope that you love them.  They're not going to win any awards for literature, but are neat and fun and have a little bit of first love, unrequited love, and forbidden love, not necessarily in that order.

I bought the first few in a set, and read them back to back, so the early books blend together for me.

  • I finished the book today since the end isn't too much more than the 100 pages. It wasn't the best book I've ever read, but it wasn't bad, either. I found myself liking the characters and discovering more about them. I've very interested to see what happens in the rest of the series with Lissa's special powers and the love connections, especially with Rose and Dimitri. I'm not going to read the next book right away, but I probably will read it at some point. I might even see the movie, but probably not in the theater.

What did you think? Will you see the movie?

  • I didn't love it.  I finished it last night, and I thought the ending was rushed.  Poor Natalie - always useless, and then such a quick end just when she could have been interesting.  Since everyone has said the series improves, I'll read more (plus it is such a fast read).  And I'll wait until dvd for the movie.
