Venting and Question

5000 Comments Fifth Anniversary 500 Love Its First Answer
edited January 2014 in Getting Pregnant

I have been waiting since last Tuesday for a call from my RE. One of the nurses called last Tuesday and said he would call me Wednesday. Well, I called this morning and said I still had not received a call from my RE and today is my last day of Provera so I should be starting a new cycle any day now. I want to know what is happening next.

The nurse told me that it “usually takes 10-14 days after stopping Provera to get AF.” Really? I said, I’ve taken Provera 6 times in the past and I usually get AF anywhere from 1-3 days later. “Oh” she says. Really? I said to her, either way I need to know what is happening for my next cycle because I need to know how much it may cost me (I have insurance but deductibles and such). She said she would remind my doctor to call me.

Five minutes later my phone rings and it is a different nurse, apologizing. Last week’s nurse was supposed to have me set up an appointment to see my RE because he wants to sit down and talk to me. So now I have an appointment for 10:45 Wednesday. Hopefully, AF holds off for a couple more days so I can figure out what is next.

I’m so freaking annoyed at that nurse right now, I could have had this appointment last week and DH and I could have already discussed it by now and decided what we want to do. Instead I have to wait. I know a couple days isn’t a lot in the scheme of things, but it doesn’t feel that way to me.

Last I spoke with my RE, he mentioned that if the Femara didn’t work again we’d be moving on to injects and possibly IUI. Are there any questions I should be asking? Ladies who have done injects/IUI what was your experience?

Thank you all so much. I’m so frustrated and stressed with this right now I can’t seem to think straight.

ETA: At least my nails are pretty.

Re: Venting and Question

  • I don't have any suggestions about what to ask etc but I would definitely bring up the fact that the 1st nurse never made your appt. I would even go into the whole this is stressful, emotional, etc and a nurse not giving you all the information needed at the time doesn't help. Yes, people make mistakes but you should still say something.

    Good luck!!

  • I'm sorry the nurse messed up and now you have to wait to see your RE.

If you do move on to injects, the only advice I can give you coming from just having a failed injects cycle is to ask them to go slow.  In hindsight, I wish my dosages were smaller and spread out longer.  I now have to take a 1-2 month break because of all the cysts I've developed from being overstimulated.  Also, if you are willing, ask if they'd be able to convert you to an IVF cycle and how much it would be if you do end up being overstimulated.

    Good luck on Wednesday!

No advice as far as IUI goes, but you'll get the hang of injects, they arent puppies and rainbows, but they really aren't that bad either! I hope you and RE can come up with a plan.

  • Thank you all so much! I will definitely be mentioning something to my RE about not getting in last week because of a careless nurse.

I don't think I'm worried (right now at least) about the shots themselves. I am worried about how much this will cost OOP which is why I wanted to know what was next last week.

My doctor did already tell me before that if we had to move to injects/IUI the process might be long because he wants to go slowly so I hopefully don't overstim.  I definitely will ask though about the possibility of converting to IVF or what to do in the case I do overstim. I would love to not lose a cycle.

I'm sorry you got the runaround. Definitely tell the RE about the mixup. And good luck! Also, be sure to ask your RE about samples and/or donated meds to help with costs. My RE wanted to give me samples SO bad since we're totally OOP for everything, but they had just run out :(  I'm hoping they'll have some for our next cycle, whenever that is!

ETA: my injects cycle was easy breezy. I went very low and slow for awhile and they eventually upped my dose to where I was doing varying amounts per day. I took Bravelle. The shots themselves were SO easy. The anticipation was the worst, but the actual stick was nothing.  Stick very quickly then push the meds in sloooooowly.. that's the key :) I barely felt anything when I did this. Piece of cake. The IUI was worse than the injectables lol.. :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • @rockabye - Thank you. I do have insurance coverage so I don't know if I would feel right asking for samples. I might though, I guess it couldn't hurt the worst that happens is that they say no and I have to pay for whatever my insurance doesn't.

I honestly think I will be more nervous about the IUI than the shots because when I got the catheter for my HSG it was a painful bitch because I have a narrow/somewhat scarred cervix. And that was with cervical dilation!

  • PP gave you great advice. The anticipation is by far the worst. Let the trigger sit out of the fridge 10 min or so before you inject. I find it takes the sting out a bit.
I had a super painful/uncomfortable HSG and the catheters are different for the IuI. I experienced a bit of pain the first time, but the doc switched and tried a different kind. I'd bring up the HSG experience and see what they can do to make the IUI cath less painful.
Sending you so much luck and good vibes!!
