Party Menu Help

I have finally decided that DS's first birthday (please someone hold me!) party will be an open house at our home beginning at 1:30 pm.  DH was telling me oh, my mom likes this and my dad likes that.  This isn't Burger King!  My mom is also giving me suggestions left and right (she thinks I should do Roast Beef, Pork and Pizza).  I don't want to be stuck in the kitchen the entire time, and I don't really have a big enough kitchen to warrant lots of hot dishes.  We are caught in limbo land between our house being small and not having enough people for a hall hence the house party.  Here's what I am thinking so far, and I am could certaintly use some suggestions.  For what it's worth, the theme is "Nautical' and there will be only 3-5 children there, including my DS and my 1 year old niece:

Cold sandwich trays of some sort

Chips and dip

Fruit/veggie tray

Deviled eggs (we are going to add a Dorito to make them look like sailboats)

Pasta salad

Birthday cake

Re: Party Menu Help

  • I think the open house idea is the best way to handle a small house/ huge guest list.  It's what we had to do for Hunter's first birthday, and it worked out great.  We even did family from 1:30-5, and then our friends came around 5 for a relaxing "We Survived the First Year" celebration.  It was a great way to stagger the massive guest list, but everyone still got to see Hunter, AND we got some relaxing time to visit with friends.

I will always go with cold sandwich trays from Giant for every party.  They are always a big hit because there is a great variety, and you don't have to worry about keeping them warm.

  • Thanks!  Our families are like night and day to say the least, so this should be interesting!

I was thinking Giant trays.  However, there is no Giant in South Philly, and my mom was all "what if there's another snowstorm and you can't get to Giant?"  South Philly places charge an arm and a leg for sandwich trays.  Ugh!

  • Have you looked at whole foods on south street? I use them all the time for work events (all of which have minimal budgets) and they always do a great job. And, no matter how many people I order for, it seems like they put double the amount of food on the trays!
  • If you're so inclined or looking for a hot option, the crock pot mac and cheese is usually a hit with large crowds :)  Either way, I think your menu is perfect.

I think open house sounds perfect.  I fully endorse supermarket trays.  We did Giant for the kid's 1st birthday.  I had a lunchmeat tray and I got a tray of boneless wings, with all sauces on the side.  They were essentially chicken nuggets, which was perfect.

Not to throw logic into the situation, but if there is a snow storm, I'm willing to be there won't be a party ;)
