So I just need to get this out.

5 years ago they found a lump on one of my breasts. I've gone in annually for a mammogram and biopsy since then to check up on them.  4 years ago they found one on the other breast and said it was close to the milk duct, but was nothing to be concerned about.

So last week I had my annual mammogram and biopsy. They called me today and asked me to come down to their office during my lunch hour to go over the results.  Well the lump in my left breast has officially moved and closed off the milk duct.  They asked me if I've had any changes in my breast size in the past few months, because sometimes that can have an affect on the placement of the lump.  This was with my primary care Dr, so I told them about the pregnancy and loss and that I grew a cup and a half in that short amount of time, and they've only gone down half a cup size since the loss.

My Dr let me know to get myself mentally prepared to not be able to nurse out of that breast.  They can only hope that it moves again with growth throughout pregnancy, but not to bank on it. Thanks Doc, I'll worry about that if/when we get pregnant again and I take that baby home and try to nurse.

Or my other option is to get the double mastectomy that he recommended 4 years ago, and then we no longer have to worry about the growth and movement of these or the fear of them turning cancerous someday.  The only reason I was against it 4 years ago was because BFing is important to me and something I have a desire to do.

WIN for Brij and her Ta-ta's!  Ugh.  Tomorrow marks 4 weeks of no drinking, but dammit getting drunk sounds great right about now.  Or maybe I should just Google "perky boobs" and pick out some nice ones to show my doc that I want to replace them with.

ETA: On the plus side, my mom's lump they found is not cancerous, and is so small they aren't worried about it. YAY!

Well yay for your moms news, that must be a huge relief. But I'm sorry about your news. Try to maybe put that out into the future since you're not trying to bf right now( which I'm so SO sorry about). Your nipples and breast and everything change so much with pregnancy that I would hope so very hard for you that it would move again someday. I'm sorry for the shit news though. Go get your drank on girl.

  • So glad your mom doesn't have cancer!! Yay!!

Sorry about the news your doctor gave you though. I recommend seeing another doctor for a second opinion, because every doctor is different. Also there are so many ways to treat breast lumps/cancer now that don't include a mastectomy. In the end you have to be comfortable with the decision you make, but I don't think a double mastectomy has to be your only option.

  • Yay for your mom! Great news!

As others have said, breasts change a lot in pregnancy so it definitely has the chance of moving out of the way. I would probably get a second opinion though. With no sign of cancer, it seems a double mastectomy is a bit drastic. But, should you go that route some day, enjoy picking out some perky boobies!

  • @xan921 Right now my plan is to get a second opinion.  It is a very drastic approach, but I know it's been one that was offered from the start since I carry the BRCA gene.  They just want to take every precautionary measure possible to not give it an opportunity to become something worse.  The only thing that kept me from it 4 years ago was because I really want to breastfeed, and my insurance would not cover any of it.  Now it will.

My mom made a good point though.  What good does it do to BF our child, if those same breasts give me cancer 5 years later, and I'm not longer there for my child?

  • I was just thinking of your mom the other day when we found out DH's aunt has breast cancer. I am so glad it worked out.

Testing positive for the BRCA gene definitely throws a wrench into the mixture. I don't have much knowledge in this area, but I would suggest seeing another doctor before making a decision. I hope, and think, you'll be able to make a more informed decision. I'm so sorry you're in this position. ((hugs))

  • Oh Brij, there is so much emotional rollercoaster in this post!

First, I'm so glad to hear your mom is in the clear; that is a huuuuge relief all around.

Second, I'm really sorry to hear that the lump in your left breast has moved and would cause a problem BFing. That is extremely disappointing when you're set on trying to BF when the time comes.

Your mom makes a great point, too. Sure, you could keep your breasts and BF when the time comes, and maybe afterward go for the mastectomy before anything further develops, but that's taking a risk and hoping you don't get a worse diagnosis in the meantime. It's a lot of pros and cons to weigh and a very personal decision. I know you will make the best choice for you, and getting a second opinion will help you do so.

Testing positive for BRCA mutation does increase your risk of developing breast cancer, but it's not a guarantee, so that's something to keep in mind, too. It's great that you're being proactive about monitoring for the time being. That's a lot more than many other women would do.
