Disposable Diapers Vs Reusable.

Husband and I are TTC so I have been looking at Baby this and thats.

What are your thoughts on reusable diapers
What method did you use with your child?

Re: Disposable Diapers Vs Reusable.

  • I'm too lazy for cloth diapers. I use them for swimming but that's it. I love our Luvs.

  • We were a Pampers family. Cleaning up poop is gross enough; no way was I going to be washing it out of cloth diapers.

  • I really wish I were the type to use cloth diapers, but I was just keeping my own head above water after my baby came. Newborns poop so frequently that I just wouldn't have been able to deal with the laundry. We use disposables and will with our second child too. Plus, I've heard that the water you end up using to clean cloth diapers kind of negates any environmental advantage they might have over disposables.

I'm kind of in this camp, too.

A NICU nurse gives this advice to moms: keep a few cloth diapers handy just in case. You may run out of disposables at an inconvenient time and aren't able to get to a store imediately. Such as out and about or 2am. Better to have a clean diaper on then a dirty one.

I never thought if I would be a cloth or disposable person. I think it comes down to what is more cost affective personally. Or does ease of use outweigh the savings.
  • We used cloth diapers and they were great. We did use disposables for a few months til he was big enough to fit in the cloth, and that was while the poop was at its messiest so it worked well for us. There is a sprayer attachment you can hook to the toilet to help though we never got one. We did do a lot of laundry, but we never had to deal with diaper rash and it saved a ton of money.
  • I'm currently pregnant, and decided that with this kiddo, we're doing the FuzziBunz route, with disposables for when we're out and about.  With my (now) 16 year old, I did disposables.

I figure that since babies are always puking and making a mess of their sheets and clothes, I'll be doing 50 frajillion loads of laundry anyway, what's an extra load (or 20)?
  • Anything to save time and energy is worth it to me, so I went with disposable.
I did look into cloth at one point, but read articles about them constricting movement, as disposable are more flexible.
  • I know that you can buy sprayers to spray off most of the poop before putting cloth diapers in the washer.....but 1) I don't have time to spray poop off diapers and 2) I'm not putting things with lots of poop on them in my washer. Keep in mind that if you plan to use childcare, most centers won't do cloth diapers. We're happy with our disposables.

  • I LOVE my cloth diapers so much. They're really not that much work than disposables. My favorites are prefolds with Thirsties covers. Way cheaper than disposables and SO cute.
