Realistic Expectations re: Toddler (almost 2) Entertaining Himself?

I'm looking for some advice. I got so frustrated with G this morning (and lat night) and I'm wondering if my expectations are realistic.

I've been doing T25 (25 minute workout). When I'm feeling ambitious I do it in the morning, sometimes I'm able to finish it before he gets up and sometimes he wakes up right in the middle of it. Other times I do it in the evening after dinner.

I cannot bring myself to do it at 9pm after he's gone to bed - which means most of the time he's in the room while we're (Casey and I) trying to do this.

We set him up with the iPad and a drink/snack but in less than 5 minutes he's running around causing some kind of shenanigans or just yelling, "Noooooooooooooooo!" for no apparent reason. This means Casey or I have to stop (which sucks b/c it's ONLY 25 minutes) to investigate what he's doing and/or what the problem is. He's not a huge TV kid. He loves Yo Gabba Gabba! and Cars Toons (the Mater shorts on Netflix) - but he's not a kid that will just sit and watch TV nor do I necessarily want him to be.. My nephew will sit glued to the iPad for hours if left to his own devices but G can't seem to sit for less than 1/2 hour.

We've tried setting him up with some of his favorite toys - but inevitably, he brings them over to where we're working out and drops them around the floor, or he quickly gets bored and starts throwing the pillows or blankets off the couch (causing more obstacles), etc.

Is it realistic for me to expect that he can happily entertain himself (with us in eye/ear shot) for 25 minutes? If so, do you have any strategies on how we can get him more interested in independent play?

Re: Realistic Expectations re: Toddler (almost 2) Entertaining Himself?

  • I would say it's probably not realistic.  At least in my experience.  For that age 10-15 minutes was about all I could get.  Especially with my first born.   She cannot play by herself.  Even now at 4.5 years old it's a struggle.  My youngest loves playing by herself, but even at age 2 could not go 25 minutes.

The only thing that could get them to sit for that long would be a favorite tv show.

  • Some 2 year olds can and some can't. It sounds like G is in the latter camp. I have one kid who wouldn't sit and watch anything for more than ten minutes until she was 3 1/2 and another kid who would watch anything on a screen intensely from an early age.

You can keep trying, but it's probably unrealistic to expect him to entertain himself for 25 minutes.

Pretty much same here. Dd loves tv though so if I needed time she would watch. There was a long while where I had to use tv while I made dinner because she would never leave me alone for just a few mins at a time in order to do anything!!! But if I don't want her watching tv there was no option.

And even now its hard to get her to play on her own.

  • yea, EJ was not able to play independently at 2, and the more I wanted/needed her to the more she seemed to be against it. Would G work out with you if he was included?  when I would do my yoga tape at home, EJ would always crawl under me while I was in down-dog or plank... it was annoying, and yet cute.
  • Mason could sit and keep himself entertained at that age, but if I was trying to get something done, he'd be more interested in that. Garrett was able keep himself busy, but he needed to be supervised at all times if I wanted my house to remain standing. =)

At their ages now, while they are more than capable of occupying themselves for 25 minutes, the second one of us jumps on the treadmill, then they are all up in our business!

I would try to involve him in some way or just do the workouts separately.

  • Nolan is typically in the camp of if he's left to his own devices and is quiet, he's likely coloring on the wall, fishing in the potty or destroying his sister's room.

He is however content to chill in his highchair with a snack and a show for 25 minutes.  Does G still use a high chair?  Can you stick him in there with a snack in front of the TV?  Or strip him down to his diaper and let him go to town with some water paints, play-doh or something...else that is a special treat to play with.

  • I hadn't tried sticking him in high chair. Thanks, I will try that! I'm sure he'd love to play with some play-doh. He's never done that! It would definitely be a treat for him. Maybe I'll put the iPad out of arms reach while he's in there too.

We do try to get him to do the moves with us and he usually does for about a minute, then he's off causing chaos somewhere :)

Thanks, ladies. I felt like I may be expecting too much and given G's personality and your thoughts, it seems like I am!

  • First born - probably not.  My 2nd, yes & 3rd as well but Caileigh - she still doesn't want to do things herself!  My suggestion was get him to do it with you but you tried that!  I would probably try to pen him in somehow? At least you may get more than 10 mins that way.

How's it going with T25 - I need to look into it again.

Also, I would be happy he doesn't bury himself in electronics!

  • Oh I am, we've never really exposed him to the ipad as anything but a "travel" TV. We've used it for long car rides and on plane rides, he doesn't play games on it or anything. I was really trying to limit his exposure to it until he's at least 2. And now that he's almost 2, I'm not sure I want him to play with it at all. I just don't think it's necessary. It would just be nice if I could find some magic "thing" that would hold his attention for a while in situations like this! :)

I do really like T25. I haven't worked out seriously in about 3.5 years (well before I was even pregnant with him) and I really feel it. A friend who did P90X told me that it's basically the same workout minus all the water breaks and stretching. I'm really sore (in a good way), so I assume it's doing something! I'd recommend it.
