Minor Gripe – Visa Gift Cards

I need new clothes. I have $125 in Visa Gift cards from this Christmas and last Christmas. They are a royal pain to use online from what I can tell. If I have a $50 card, then my total purchase has to be less than $50 including tax and shipping. And if I break up what I want into multiple orders to use the cards then I have to pay shipping on each one.

Does anyone know of any online vendors that will let you pay for one order with multiple cards? Or is my only option to buy clothing in person?

I’m trying to eek out some time to go clothes shopping, but with my class schedule lately it feels a little wrong to take more time for myself over the weekend. Heather and I need to do some shopping for her birthday party on Saturday, so I guess I could try to shop for clothes while she’s with me…

Re: Minor Gripe – Visa Gift Cards

  • I ran into same issue with Am Ex gift cards.... ANNOYING for sure.
  • why not use your normal credit card, then in exchange use those visa cards to buy groceries.
  • I hate Visa/Amex gift cards. I learned the hard way that if you don't use the whole balance at once, it's a headache to use them, because you need to know exactly what the amount on the card is, and often they take out a transaction fee.

I like Amanda's idea on using them for daily shopping and using the credit card online.

This is what I ended up doing when I was having trouble using a card from an appliance rebate. Your other option might be to load up your cart so you have everything you want in there and then call customer service to place your order.

  • I used a comcast one for my glasses. They kept putting in amounts until it went through.

I would use it at a B&M Target and know exactly how much is on it since they let you split payments.

  • Ugh what a pain.  We got a $100 card as a wedding gift.  Luckily we used it for an exact $100 purchase.  Usually I use them on groceries because the Giant Eagle checkout has no issue with using a partial balance on them and then letting you charge/use cash for the rest.

It is not hard to get me to agree with you though.  All gift cards annoy me.  I have a two year old Cheesecake Factory card in my purse with something like $2 on it.

  • I put only the four cheapest items that I had found in my cart and they totaled $45.97 including shipping. My visa from last year has $46 dollars on it. Woot!

Still aggravating, but I think I'll save the $25 one for bricks and mortar purchasing and see if I can build a $49 cart for the $50 card. Or something.

  • I buy gift cards with my rebate/visa cards. I just buy a $50/100 amazon or target, etc

That's what I was going to recommend. Take your Visa cards to GE and then buy $125 in gift cards split out between the online retailers you were shopping from.

And you get fuel perks - easy peasy!

Unless, of course, you're not buying from a "common" retailer.
