Question for moms & moms-to-be

Do any of you moms or moms-to-be use/plan to use cloth diapers? H and I will be TTC this fall so I've been doing some research because I like to be prepared. I know the initial cost of cloth diapers is expensive but the long time of buying disposable diapers adds up to be more. So tell me your pros and cons of both please!

Re: Question for moms & moms-to-be

  • I won't be... mostly because the thought of putting poopy diapers in my washing machine on a consistent basis really grosses me out. This is one area where I'm going with convenience and ease. I totally get why people would want to use cloth diapers- It's just not for me.

  • We chose not to because of convenience and cost. While in the long run we would spend about the same people could buy us diapers for our shower so Ethan is 4 months old now and we have never bought diapers. Also we have a hard time now keeping up with laundry so I couldn't imagine adding diapers he goes through so many in a day. I know they have those services that will trade out but we don't have one in our area. Also it is easier when we travel or if he goes and stays with my mom. Plus I know some women who use cloth diapers but still keep disposables on hand for certain times and I don't see the point and spending the money on both. That's just how we feel though.
  • We chose not to. Mainly because I didn't want to wash poop in my washer. But also because a lot of day cares won't go near cloth diapers. I didn't want to deal with using cloth at home and disposables at daycare. I get why people do it and to each their own but there was no way it was going to work in our household.

As far as the expense of diapers, yes they are expensive but we use store brand and it really isn't that bad. We use Target for the most part and they are always having sales on them.

  • I suppose I could fall under the "mom to be" category since H & I hope to have kid(s) one day. When a friend of mine had her baby, she used a cloth diaper with a biodegradable disposable insert, so you weren't washing poopy diapers (or at least they weren't as poopy).

This was years ago so she had to order them online, but I know there are more popular versions like gDiaper. It's something I want to look into more when H & I are at that point. I don't know how it compares cost wise.

  • I was looking online at just the first cloth diaper website that I could find and for a basic all in one (that means something but I'm not 100% sure what) diaper package, it was almost $700. Now I understand you are getting all the diapers you would need in theory but that still seems crazy expensive to me! I think I'd rather spend $30/box than such a large initial up front cost. The poop doesn't really bother me, I deal with doggie doo all day. Thanks for the responses ladies, I appreciate it!

  • We are using disposables.  We actually haven't spent much money on them so far.  We always check ads and online for deals (i.e. buy two boxes get a 15 dollar gift card).  I wanted to do disposables for the ease and convenience.  My husband wanted to do cloth diapers, but it sounded like too much work.

  • We are going to use cloth diapers! I am actually sooo excited and it actually looks a lot easier then I had originally thought, we are using mostly pockets and hybrids (All in 2's)  so not getting into the fancy folding and stuff. I already have the bulk of my one size (16+ lbs - 2+ years) diapers and got most of them for really good prices hardly used or never used on craigslist. I think I have spent about 200 dollars on 40 diapers containing a variety of brands (some of which are 20-25$ new) and  we are planning on getting some disposable liners for camping and such.

We are opting not to use cloth until she fits the one size though as an additional 30 newborn diapers seems expensive when she will only be in them until shes 3 or 4 months though (Unless people buy them for us, we do have a cloth diaper registry).

I have found the cloth diapering board on the bump and FAQ's to be extremely helpful in explaining cloth diapering, cost, care etc. I'll let you know how it works out come fall if you remind me!

This exactly! I always have coupons and when we eventually have to buy diapers we will use them plus watch sales.

All in one's are the most expensive type from what I have seen, and most people don't particularly like them. $700 is a huge expense up front, like I said I have spent about $200 and have pretty much all I plan on buying, even if I bought them all new, pocket diapers seem to be much more affordable (like $400 for a full stash), more customization to your kids needs,  and not much extra work then an all in one.
  • We're using disposables. We have been buying when we have coupons and finding sales. I've got a pretty good stash in various sizes already. Pampers are actually made locally at the P&G plant, and my Aunt works there and they have employee sales at cost twice a year so she offered to hook us up.

All I know is working at a daycare and at the church nursery. Our daycare doesn't care one way or another, but it's been a while since we had a kid in cloth diapers. But at the church nursery, quite a few kids are in cloth diapers. I thought about it for when we are parents and I think I would like to try the cloth diaper thing. But There is one kid I. The church nursery that always smells like he's poopy because his parents don't wash his diapers properly and it's really pretty gross. The other kids in cloth diapers are fine. They don't have that chemical diaper smell. But please, don't be the parent of the smelly kid in cloth diapers.

  • $700 is crazy! I have a few friends who cloth diaper and I know they buy what they can (the covers and whatnot) used. So if you do decide to do it, I would say to look into that.

  • We cloth diaper and it's a huge cost savings Especially because we plan on having more than one child. We spent no where near $700. Last I looked it was around $200, I think we maybe closer to $350 now. I never pay full price there are always sales and coupons. We use various pockets and BG freetimes. Our daycare is OK with both of them. They are not OK with AI2s, prefolds, and fitteds.

We started from newborn using 24 prefolds, a snappi and 2 covers. Which we spent about $50 on.

Both DH and I love it! I also made cloth wipes, though we do sometimes use regular if we run out we now prefer the cloth. I could seriously go on forever!

  • I totally wish I could do it! I just can’t get passed the washing the poo off in the toilet thing. Even with a sprayer.

I am going to feel so absolutely guilty using sposies because they are so not environmentally friendly. I am trying to find the right diaper for us. I just really don’t wanna use the crap in the stores with all the chemicals and the fact that they aren’t biodegradable.

I would LOVE to be a cloth diaper mom but it’s so confusing to me that I just quit researching.

I highly encourage it though! And totally look up to the moms that do cloth diaper

  • @invane00 they make some sposies that are all natural. I'm sure the name of the brands but I have heard ladies on TB mention them before.
  • @invane00 Honest company. I'm chemical touching baby crazy. If we used sposies that's what we would use. When we use disposable wipes that's what we use.

  • I like the idea behind cloth diapering and I appreciate all the input from you ladies! I could totally see myself being the mom that gets up for a monster dirty diaper at 3am, not wanting to deal with the poo, putting it in a plastic bag and then never dealing with it. I know that I still have a ton of time to consider all the options but I like hearing what you ladies have to say about it. I don't have a lot of friends with babies yet so I'm limited on my resources :)

  • No personal experience, but my brother and SIL use cloth, and they love it. They found a company that does a trial program of sorts.. You pay a deposit, and they send you a number of different kinds of diapers. Then at the end of the trial period, you send back the diapers, and get your deposit back.

There is also a fee, but it was really not much at all ($10 maybe?) They loved it because they were able to see which diapers worked best for my nephew, and I think they plan on doing it for each size change.

This would also be a good thing to do if you're unsure about the process in general.

FWIW, they use sposies whenever they are away from home for an extended time. Not only is this easier for them, but it has given them a chance to use the boxes that were gifted to them. I believe their day care is pro-cloth diapers.

Also EBF poo you don't have to wash off. Diapers go straight in the wash. Once you introduce food they max liners like dryer sheets you can put down. A roll of $100 is $7. We might use those for daycare, but you could use them at night.
