Re: NBR: The weather

  • I wonder what place in the continental US actually has the worst winter.  Almost all of us think we do, and it's a bit subjective, but I'm curious.

Depends which source you use.  http://www.almanac.com/content/worst-winter-weather-cities has a general list, and http://www.forbes.com/2010/02/05/weather-snow-storm-lifestyle-travel-winter-snowfall.html has this one.

  • We had the most snow we've ever had up to this point where I am at.  Last year at this point, we had a total of 9.9 inches.  This year, we're up to 50 inches total with more on the way.

    I'm over it.

  • Thanks @sassypants527! I always pictured my neck of the woods as being one of the worst, but each northern area has their highlights.

  • I wish I could live for a few days in an area with tons of snow. We get excited over an inch here. There are maybe two inches on the ground and all the schools let out early yesterday and everything is closed today. The roads are frozen for sure but it's really hilarious when I think about areas with more snow. Maybe we're just not used to driving in it here.

It's that but it's also the lack of equipment to deal with/remove the snow that compounds the problem.

    for sure!!!

Here in PA, if there is bad weather, Penn DOT pre-treats the roads with a brine solution.  Then once the snow/ice starts falling, there are plows and salt trucks out constantly (seriously, the drivers are on 12+ hr shifts).

In the South, they don't have anything like that.  Plus, the drivers aren't used to driving in winter weather (or don't know how) so that is why people were "stranded" in 1-2".

It's all relative... remember the "quake" a couple years ago in DC/VA/PA/NY?  We freaked the 'eff out while those in CA were like, "lol!  that wasn't a quake!"

    Same goes for a hurricane.

Here it's the volume of traffic and the amount of tourists.  But I think that all northern cities would have the same issue.

But I'm just really tired of it, and my whole family has cabin fever pretty bad.  There is too much tv-watching and looking forelornly out at the snow-covered swingset, too much fighting, and too many frickin' clothes to wear all the time which leads to too much laundry.  :(

Sophie asked if we could go to the zoo last weekend and I looked at her like she's grown another head.

Having grown up in NE Ohio I still LOL at southerners with snow for the most part.  It usually looks like a bit of powdered sugar and then people freak the fuck out, buy french toast supplies, and have maybe one day off.  However, I feel so badly for Atlantans today.  So many of my friends took hours to get home from work yesterday if they made it at all.  I now live outside of Roanoke, and it isn't nearly as bad thought I'm taking the day off since I'm kinda rural and the back roads are not great.

  • I totally agree.  We're prepared for nor'easters.  Tornadoes or earthquakes? We'd be a mess!

  • We don't have a ton of snow right now. But we have crazy ass winds that create massive drifts (apparently the one at the end of the driveway is 3 ft tall and 2 ft wide. MH 4 wheel drive truck had issues with it) and white out conditions.

Funny story. A couple of weeks ago we had this same weather. They closed the roads due to white out conditions and the drifts were awful. Well it didn't stop mh from working. This was the front page of the nearest cities newspaper the next day.

Yup that is him driving around. Apparently he was the only one on the road besides the plows.
  • As one who lives in the LOL section, I will say that I thought for a minute about how horribly unprepared we would be if we were to get a storm like this.  The last time it snowed in LA, I was 5.  EVERYTHING shut down.  We got like an inch of snow.  But there is no such thing as a snow plow in LA!

@GreenBride624, I remember that!  And I remember thinking "Oh, please!  That is not an earthquake!"  But you're absolutely right - we're equipped to deal with that and much larger quakes with minimal disruption.  Most of the rest of the country is not.  Which is why an inch of snow shuts down the entire city, but an earthquake under a 5 probably wouldn't even warrant clearing the kids out of the classroom.

  • It's the coldest January here in PA since 1990 and one of the 20 coldest recorded. I don't mind snow, but I agree with pp in feeling terrible for those people in Atlanta! I wouldn't want to drive on that ice either. When my aunt lived in Charlotte NC they would occasionally get a little bit of snow and the few plow trucks that were out weren't putting down salt, but rather something that reminded her of brownie mix and was only to help with traction. Just not equipped for that kind of weather. They said that kids had to spend the night at school and all those people stuck on the interstate for 24 hours :( Everyone should have a blanket, water, and some food in their car just in case. And for goodness sake don't eat snow! Hypothermia is no joke! (We see a lot of that if there is a road closure near the hospital I work at).

  • I'm in Birmingham and it is terrible here. What the PP said is so true, we expect tornadoes not snow and there is zero budget set aside for salt/sand/plows and that's why it's like the Walking Dead out there right now.

It didn't help that even as of yesterday morning we were being told that we were going to get a "light dusting." Meteorologists were off on the forecast by 120-150 miles and our light dusting became 2 inches of snow.

I can't complain though. I made it home safely and so did my friends and family and since the offices were closed due to the snow/ice, I'm still getting paid :-)
  • Even crazier?

Our weather Saturday and Sunday is supposed to be in the low 60s.

I did that when I was working for my last company.  I was frequently on the highway driving all over PA (plus, my Mom was stuck on the highway for 12+ hrs during a storm without food - lesson learned).

BUT... we live in PA where snow is expected, not AL.  :)
