Postpartum lump on breast?

Good morning, ladies! I'm waking you up this morning by talking about my boobs.

This morning, when I got up to feed Colin, I noticed my milk came in (I've been doing cold compresses to slow down production since I'm EFF, but apparently that's not working). I went to go change my shirt and when I had my hands over my left breast I noticed there is a hard section over my nipple. It feels like several little hard lumps and one the size of a dime maybe directly over my nipple.

Anyone have this? I think I am calling the OB today just to talk about it.

Re: Postpartum lump on breast?

  • I get clogged ducts that feel like lumps (sometimes pretty painful) especially when I've gone too long without pumping. I'm guessing that's what yours are, although mine have never been that close to the nipple. I'd think that since your body is making milk but you're not expressing it...that is kind of like me going too long without pumping, kwim? I'm not sure how you should deal with them though, because that would be different from what I do. :( do they hurt?

  • Not really. They just hard underneath the skin. And it's on the breast that's leaking the most

It sounds like it could be normal, I would give it a few days and see if cold compresses continue to help. If it's not gone by next week I'd call your doctor just in case.

I've also heard mint helps dry out your milk supply. Not sure how true that it, but something to look into.

Sounds normal. When I weaned off, my boobs turned rock hard and hurt like hell, but before that I did feel little lumps from the clogged milk ducts. If you do feel concerned about it, call your OB, but I am sure its because of the milk coming in.

I've also gotten clogged ducts that feel like hard lumps but never on the nipple. If it does start to hurt, turn redder or warm around the area make sure to call your doc ASAP. Also if you suddenly spike a fever, feel nauseous or get the chills. All could be signs of mastitis which I've had three time between my two kids and is not fun at all.

Unfortunately I don't have much advice on how to deal with it if it is clogged ducts though because my normal advice would be warm compress and pump or nurse as much as possible which wouldn't help you out.

I've heard sudafed and cabbage leaves in your bra could help dry you up quicker, but I have no personal experience with either.

  • I would guess normal - if you push on them, does it cause milk to come out?  My boobs get weird hard spots sometimes that is just a milk backup.  I hear sudafed also helps dry up milk.

  • I also EFF and when my milk came in I got lumps kind of like that before my boobs turned rock hard. I wore an incredibly tight bra and tight shirts for like 5 days. It was painful but I was all dried up in that 5 days.
