  • We always had outdoor cats, since we lived in a rural area.  But when I was 8 we got a Brittany Spaniel puppy named Samantha.  She was crazy but fun, a great breed if you want to wear out your kids :) This pic isn't of her but this is what she looked like.   She passed away in 2007 (a few weeks after my grandmother)...I miss her!image

  • Yes, we had a chow chow.  His name was Chuy and he was the best dog.  Unfortunately, he got hit by a car one night.  That was very devastating and I still remember that day vividly even though I was really young.

After he passed away, we got a black lab and named him Shadow.  He was a terrible dog!  He chewed up everything, torn up the yard, and was just so hyper!  We are very laid back people, so he obviously was not a good fit for our family.  My parents had a friend that was super active and he offered to take Shadow.

We also always had at least one cat.  My mom had a grey cat named Sheba. She lived a long life though and got put down when she was 17 because she couldn't use the bathroom anymore.  Then, I had a cat named Suede.  She was a beautiful Himalayan and she was such a good cat.  She knew what time I came home from school and would go sit at the front window and wait for me to get home.  She slept on my pillow above my head every night and was always around me.  We had to put her down because of kidney problems.

  • We got a yorkie when I was 6 as a house warming gift.  His name was Oscar because he looked like Oscar the grouch when he was a pup.  He passed away in 2006 at 15.5 years old.  We still miss him.

We tried to have cats, but it never really worked out until the last one.  Ashley and Callie were MEAN, gosh they were mean.  We got Chance from my friend in the 8th grade as a kitten.  He's grumpy too but tolerable.  He's still alive and kicking at 16 years old.

We also had fish when I was younger, I tried to have some after I moved back form college.  They never lasted.  I had a lizard for a while... a bunny.

  • I should add Chad's childhood pets bc he has some funny stories.  First is the bunny named Snuggles.  Snuggles was snuck into his family van by his uncle, a dairy farmer in VT, while they were packing the car up for the drive back home. They got home and found a caged bunny in the back of the van!  Another time they came back to PA from VT and his uncle had shipped a frog from Spain to their house.  They named him Christopher Columbus.  He also had a cocker spaniel named Joshua G. Buchanan (?) who they bought off of a nun for $50.  She had originally named him Howdie Doodie.  Josh lived to be 16!

  • Yes! From before my birth to college, at different periods there were a total of four dogs (only two at a time at most), two cats (both still around!), three birds that we took in so we never really knew how old they were, and a bunch of fish off and on at different points in time. The best was the last dog we got, Sammy, when I was 14 or so. She got really sick really quickly a few years ago and died at Christmas. I miss her every day.

Is it weird whenever I see a goat I think of you?

  • We had a beagle named Freckles before I was born. She used to like to terrorize my grandfather by chewing the phone cords and doing her business so my grandpa would step in it. Then we got a Rottweiler name Fara from my uncle. He gathered up my brother and I and told us that was our dog before consulting with my parents. Let's just say that my parents weren't to happy with him.

We also had cats. My step mom had a mean old cat for a while name Misty. After she passed away, we got two new kittens and named them Scooter and Skylark. They lived for about 19 years.

  • We had a rat terrier, Sparky from the time I was three until just before I graduated from high school. We also briefly had a lab puppy but she got hit by a car shortly after we got her. It was very sad.

During my childhood, we had several dogs, a cat, a parakeet and a hamster. I was more attached to Cleo the cat than anything else. She was basically my baby from the time I was 10 up until my senior year of college. About a year or so after she passed, I found a few old photos of her. This was one of them

  • Oh yes, all throughout my childhood. Dogs, cats, hamsters, and at one point a fat lop-eared rabbit named Mr. Fezzywig. I didn't live in a home without pets until I moved into my first apartment, which didn't allow animals. That was a sad, strange experience. :(

  • I've had pets everywhere I lived except for my dorm room freshman year! At one point we had green garden snakes, (Mr. Wiggles!), a toad (Mr. Toad....who turned out to be female), and gerbils.
Cats - we had Foster and Cooper until I was 7 or so. They got killed by stray dogs :( Then we waited another year or two and got Catera. We ended up having to put him to sleep a couple of years later because he contracted feline leukemia. Then we got Sarah and my parents still have her! She's 13 or 14 now, I believe!

Dogs - Brandy, a german shepard/rottweiler mix. She got hit by a car when I was 5 or 6, then we got Nina, a german shepard. We had her until she was 9 or 10, then she got hip displaysia and couldn't use her back legs at all, so we ended up having to put her to sleep since she was an outside dog. We tried a rescue named Chester, but he kept running away and we never found him the 2nd or 3rd time it happened. Then we had Peaches, a rottweiler. She got hit by a car as well when she was about 2. Now my parents have a rottweiler named Maggie. They've had her for 5 or 6 years.

  • Lots of people had spaniels as kids! They're the best dogs. My parents got a black cocker spaniel named Emilee the year before I was born. She lived until I was 12. We got a tri-color cocker (black, white, and liver) just a few days before Christmas a few months after Emilee died that we named Holly. At 12, she developed cancerous stomach tumors and my dad made the tough decision to have her put to sleep, which was especially hard for him because he was still living alone.
  • We got a dog when I was 2.  Her name was Hawk Eye and my dad found her near his job at the time, eating out of a garbage can.  Her name was Hawk Eye and she was the best dog there ever was.  She was a mutt who died when I was 16.

My parents currently have inherited my SIL's dog, a Jack Russell named Bacon.  Bacon was a pound return, twice, so we don't know how old he is.  He was fully grown, around 2, when SIL got him in 2000.  He was sick 2 weeks ago and my mom brought Bacon to the vet.  The vet said there is no way Bacon is approximately 15, he thinks Bacon's around 8.  The vet is wrong.

We had a parade of cats.  My parents got Tiger and Eleanor when they were first married.  Eleanor got sick and died when I was around 7 or 8 and Tiger lived to be about 15.  Then there was McKitten.  We got him shortly after Hawk Eye.  Hawk Eye thought McKitten was her baby and would carry him around in her mouth.  She snapped his neck.  Then there was Puss and Boots who my brother found in a lot near our house when I was around 6.  Boots dies around 1999.  Puss lived until 2004 or 2005.  Then there was Nurmal, who we got right before Boots died.  My dad found him when he was doing work in my mom's friend's house.  Nurmal would come over and eat lunch with my dad every day.  My dad asked my mom's friend if he belonged to anyone and she said no.  When my dad finished the work, he took Nurmal home with him.  Nurmal looked very similar to Boots.  He tried to tell my mom it was Boots until he was holding Nurmal and Boots walked into the room.  Nurmal was the best cat I've ever met.  He used to cuddle with me all the time.  He was so playful.  I cried my eyes out, at work, when he died.  He died during the work day.  Then there was Baby, who we found living in our wood pile in our driveway in the Fall of 1999.  Baby passed away last spring.

My mother says she is done with pets when Bacon passes away.  I'll believe it when I see it.  H is dying to get a dog, but our apartment is way too small for one.
  • My dad would often come home from work with a new dog and my mom would freak out! We had several throughout my childhood and our first I remember the most. He was very old, blind/deaf and one night did not return home. I still remember hearing the knock on the door from the stranger coming to apologize for hitting our dog, he didn't make it. Still tears me up to think about that night. All the other dogs he brought home were crazy or I wasn't really around for them (away at college).
  • My parents still have our first dog, Godiva, that we got when I was 17. She is turning 11 in March! She is a poorly bred chocolate lab. She has bilateral hip dyplasia that she was born with. It is very severe (one of the worst cases our vet had seen) yet she isn't in that much pain because her hips are so out of place that she doesn't have any bone on bone grinding. She has developed arthritis in her elbows and spine from compensating for her bad hips. She is very stoic though, and doesn't show her pain. My parents figure that when she does, it will be her time. They acquired Kelli, another chocolate lab, shortly before she turned 7. She turned 10 in September. She was previously bred by a reputable breeder (the same one I got my lab, Addy, from). She was retired when she was done having puppies and was a good match for Godiva. She is spunky and a troublemaker, but she makes everyone laugh.

Here are the girls together, Kelli is the one with her head up.
