WIJFR: This Song Will Save Your Life (sp)

This was cute!  I stayed up WAY too late last night reading it because I got so sucked into the story.  So I read it in like, a day.

However.  I thought the writing was just good and the character development was lacking.  Other than Elise, I thought all the characters were sort of flat.

Also, I'm really glad that she didn't end up with Char at the end and that she even wised up about him when her English friend was talking about how he might change and how she still wanted to be with him.  During the last scene, when Elise was DJing her party after running into Char working at the pizza place, i was half afraid he was going to wander into the party and talk about how he had seen the error of his ways and he loved her and blah, blah, blah, but I'm really glad that didn't happen, and she was so self-sufficient at the end.

Was there still a buddy read happening with this book, or did you guys finish?

  • I read this a few weeks ago. I thought it was cute, but it didn't blow my socks off. It was a little too short, IMO. Not enough meat.

  • I really liked this one. But I still don't understand the appeal of a DJ (being one or seeing them as celebrities).
  • I agree with your reviews. It was cute and I like the author's style, but there was some connection missing. I did like her relationship with her parents. I felt like that was sort of realistic.

  • I should have looked more carefully at the spoiler tag before I clicked this. *kicks rocks* Still want to read this though.

Oh no!  I'm sorry!  It was still cute and worth the read.
  • I'm part of the Buddy Read for this one.   I finished it on the weekend.   The others are still reading....

I admit that since she mentioned The Cure, The Smiths and Jeff Buckley all within the first 40 pages I was hooked.

It wasn't a perfect book, but I still enjoyed it and appreciated it.  I loved that Char WASN'T the perfect Charming Man that pretty much every other darn YA book chokes us with.  This was actually realistic.

I found very few other cliches in it, too....   And I kind of love the author for that.  I gave it 4 stars.

  • I loved this book!

I totally agree with you guys...I loved that Char wasn't the Charming Man after all. He was a hot mess of a guy and I'm glad Elise recognized that and moved on with her life, being super awesome without him.

  • I think I'm also not cool enough to know most of the music mentioned. I recognized about two of the songs and went and looked up samples from the list at the end of the book to get a better feel for it. I just don't see the "party" in a lot of the selections that would make her this slammin' DJ. :)

OMG, I agree!  I thought the music choices were pretty weird, too.  And so much of it was so old, I didn't really see how high school and college kids now would be that into it.

Aww, I loved the music, but oldies are my jam, so... ;)
I agree that kids these days probably wouldn't be as into it as I am though.

  • No, no, no, I liked the music choices personally, I just agree with cnthrdlywt that I didn't see them as particularly clubby or party-like.  And I also don't see them as being overly popular with hs and college kids right now.

Then again, I think Char made some comment like that in the book - something about how part of the awesome of being a DJ is getting to introduce people to the music that you like and getting them to like it too.  So maybe it does make sense.
  • Remember this was an underground place - not a mainstream deal....  Where people would rather be introduced to Morrissey rather than hearing the crap on the radio.    :P

Agreed.  Actually a lot of the songs mentioned, I've had dance parties either by myself or with a lot of friends at a house.

Also @moroccojade, I finished.  I'm PMing Skeezon (who I am not tagging to help her avoid spoilers) to see where she's at.

Good point, you're right.  And nothing about it seemed odd to me until those high school girls showed up and were bragging about it to their friends, and the people at Elise's school were all up in her shit about it.
  • Okay, buddy readers. I finished.

Overall, I thought it was 'eh.' I thought it was slow moving and the character development was lacking. I did think the various relationships were realistic, just not very interesting.

I felt the weight of her depression, of her need to fit in, but I couldn't connect with much else. I had very little emotional attachment to anyone.

I'm beginning to think that maybe YA isn't for me. I know that's crazy talk on this board. Alas, my old ass is just not the ideal demographic.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.
