Do you have an office in your home?

... if you don't work from home, that is. Do you have an office in your house and do you actually use it? We don't really use ours and are finally getting rid of the HUGE desk and credenza we have to make some space for other crap that we need to get rid of too haha. I'm trying to decide if we should get a smallish desk to go in the room though, just in case. I'm leaning towards no. Is it weird to not have an office? (not that I really care what anyone thinks lol) I mean, even when DH is in school, he studies on the couch. Our desk/credenza has become a place where I pile crap, which sucks. We will buy or build a nice filing cabinet to go in that room, but otherwise, I'm not seeing a need. I'm really just wondering if I'm the only person out there that doesn't have a real, pressing need for a defined "office" at home. That and I'm insanely bored and this board is dead today.

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

Re: Do you have an office in your home?

  • We have a room we call the office- but is definitely more of a storage locker. There is a desk, with a monitor that hooks up to H's laptop.
Rumor has it that before me, he even used it as an office!

It also has a number of overflowing bookshelves, and his Pez collection.

We do keep important documents 'filed' in there, but it also is a home for counter top appliances that don't fit on our counter top.

So yeah- you are not alone!

  • We have a room that we call the office, but we never use it other than to store stuff.  It's the designated future nursery, so it just sits in limbo.

  • We have an office/guest room.  We use it often, especially H, because it has the computer where a lot of music and movies are stored.  My stepdaughters also use the computer to play games sometimes.  It's not very organized and we want to make it more functional, so that's on the to-do list.  I don't go in there often because the disorganization stresses me out.

  • I have an office, and H has an office.  Mine has a small desk, futon, storage units, and extra TV in it.  I run Tastefully Simple out of that "office," but am rarely ever in there. If I need to spread things out to work on them I just use the futon.  So we've discussed getting rid of the desk to gain some space.

H has a corner desk in his office, and a 3 drawer storage unit.  We've decided that if we get rid of my desk in my office, then I will use his if I need to. He uses his desk once a month for city stuff, but otherwise we just use the laptop or iPad on the couch.

There's also a desk in the study. So I could always set up shop there if I needed to, but it's a room you walk through to get to the others. So it's more for show than anything.

  • No we don't have an office.  We have a small desk that sits in a corner of our living room but that rarely gets used even.  My laptop travels around the apartment with me and if I need space to spread out papers I use the kitchen table.

I do 90% of my 'officey' stuff at work during my breaks; it's just easier for me that way.

  • We have a full fledged office and it's useless. When I work from home, I always just take my laptop downstairs to the couch. Tom's desk is in there and he uses it for computer games but he could very easily transplant his desk to another room in the house.

The plan is to make it a big luxurious bathroom in the next few years.

  • We do. We set it up that way when we moved into our house.

Before getting my laptop for Christmas, the desktop was the only computer at home that I had to use. DH brought his desk from college, which has a couple of drawers, one of which is good for filing folders. We also keep our bookshelves in there along with a futon. It ends up being a catch-all room for a lot of crap, but having the desk to work at is nice, too.

Now that I've got my laptop, I've mostly been parking myself on the couch for my WFH days. I'll probably still do my freelance work from the desktop though, because I like to put my reference materials in front of me on the desk while I work.

  • We have an office. We each have a desk in it. But honestly we don't ever use the computer up there bc we have a laptop and an iPad downstairs. We both have separate filing systems/cabinets as well which mostly keep us organized. But there's no getting around the fact that we let stuff pile up first before organizing it properly.

  • We have a guest room that DH's desk is in. He's in school FT right now, and loves having his space. The only reason we have a bed in their for guests is because I insisted... Otherwise our friends/family would either sleep on the couch or at a hotel... Lame. I think if you guys aren't really going to use it, then why bother? Def not weird!

  • I also have an office couch.
  • We have 2.5 offices! haha. We are both in our offices now. When we have kids, we will only have 1.5 offices. I use mine for school/computer and DH goes on the computer a lot to play games. Downstairs our house has this little media area, which is also an office space. I like studying in my office versus say the kitchen table because it is set up ergonomically.
