I need packing help

I have never moved an entire house so I am not sure where to even start. I want to make sure everything is kosher with the inspections before I start a total deconstruction of the house. We are still up in the air about where we will be going or if/where we are going to build so there is that added problem. We have a POD currently and ultimately I want all the furniture besides our bed to be stored there until we settle in a new house. We will be moving in with my parents inititally, then if we build we will move to the beach house for the summer. Still both places we will have everything we need. My other thought was to get a HUGE storage unit for everything since an entire house wont fit in the POD.

UGH!! I dont know where to start!

  • Jeff got a storage unit when he moved into my apt.  It worked for us while the house was being built.

  • I would start packing things you KNOW you don't need or can live without. For me it was extra kitchen dishes, house decorations, holiday decorations, etc. We started with one POD since we were renting a house that had everything we need. We ended up.getting A second pod for some of our furniture that we thought we would store at the rental. Ended up being too cluttered. I love the pods and would do that again.

  • first, congrats on getting an offer on the house!!!!

one complication for you is that you're going to need clothes for 2 season! When we moved our house we went from one to the other to I'm not really sure what your best suit your situation.  @klm42404 thoughts sound good. and of course see what @amcourt09 has to say!

    eeerr or cleaning up paint...
  • Yeah, I cant wait to hear that story......

  • Oh goodness, I am no help!  We had a month between settlement and our lease on our apartment being up, so we did it little by little.
  • We used PODs and I would definitely do that again. We also used 2 guys and a truck, which was totally more affordable. A storage unit is probably a good idea if you're going to need to get to your stuff and if you are not sure how long you'll be in between places.
  • Yea..I was not painting last night. I was cleaning up paint and silently holding back tears. HA! Just kidding. I actually thought I handled the situation pretty well. I didn't yell at all! ;)

As far as packing, like KLM said, pack what you can now! March 14th will come sooner than you expect and you don't want to be stuck throwing random things in random boxes at the last minute  like me like someone I know. Other than that, I really am not much help because my ILs have a basement that is the size of their entire house so all of our belongings have been in their basement. Thankfully because our condo complex didn't allow PODs :(

My biggest advice - LABEL ALL OF YOUR BOXES! I procrastinated like a mofo and ran out of time so some of our boxes have super detailed labels and some don't have anything written on them. Especially since you are going to be storing your stuff for a long period of time. I can't tell you how any nights I've spent digging through boxes trying to find Shawn's razor or Shawn's work shoes or Teddy's blahh blah blahh.
