Job Search

So I began the job search since I graduate mid-May (104 more days!). Every time I start the search online, I see jobs that I feel like I'm not quite qualified for or jobs that seem to be extremely entry level and I'm too qualified for. I'm just not finding any jobs that feel right enough to even apply. So then I start getting stressed out.

What are your favorite online job search databases? I know of indeed.com and monster.com, but wondering what else is out there. I'd hate to just "settle" on job that I won't be happy with, so I'm hoping to expand my searching field

I would still apply for the ones that you might not be quite qualified for.  Remember, you can learn!
I always used indeed.  If a school has an opening, I have ones that are only schools. I would also check your state job system.  They sometimes have good ones.

Does your college have a career center?  They might have some contacts that you would use even if you aren't staying in the area.
  • Joy is having a rough time in her job search. From what I can tell most employers seem to be ignoring most of her job history due to it not being in this country. :( A real shame considering she has an MBA in which she earned straight A's in a language not her own.

She's at the point now where she even gets mad at me for bringing it up in front of other people because she's ashamed that she can't find a job. I keep trying to explain to her how hard it is to find a job here right now, but that doesn't seem to make her feel any better. :(

  • Poor Joy!!!  It is extremely hard.  I think it will be still hard for a few years.  I have 2 Master's degrees in counseling and another one for school counseling.  I had a 4.0 in graduate school. I was willing to move anywhere in the USA.  I applied for 163 jobs everywhere.  I tried schools, universities, and private practices.  She is not the only one!  I hope she reads this.

The right job will come along soon!
  • Tell Joy I completely understand. This close to graduation, everyone asks if I've found a job yet. Psh, most places who are posting jobs are "starting february," not "we'll wait for you to graduate in May and hire you."

The job search is very frustrating and definitely takes a toll. Maybe it's just because all the jobs I've had up until now have been "stepping stone jobs." And all of a sudden, I've finished school, and I feel like I should find the job I've been aiming for this whole time. And I don't even know what it is.

Blah, I'll find something eventually. It is nice to hear other's going through similar situations though :)

Well, in Joy's case, she wants to feel like she can "make it" in this country.  This isn't helping. :(

  • My husband's aunt had the same thing when she moved from the Philippines. She is just starting to get in her field, but it's a different shift because she has to prove herself. I do wish all of you luck. I guess it's time for me to start looking again... Not looking forward to it, because I know I can't come back as quick next year.

  • I'm sorry to hear about Joy's troubles finding a job. I hope someone gives her a chance soon.

It took me 3 year after I got my Bachelors to get hired to teach. I was always being told I had a great interview, but they were going with someone who had more experience since I had none. Then when I finally got hired it was at a Charter school in Philly and the second school I worked at was a Charter as well. I have yet to work in a public school with regular school hours.

I wish everyone searching for jobs the best. I will potentially be looking for a work from home job in the teaching field (tutoring or teaching online classes). We'll see.

Me too.  I almost thought about trying to get her into Scentsy or something like that.  But I hate trying to turn all your friends into customers.  Especially since we don't know anybody here....

  • Can she do any translating? I know I have a friend and she gets $30/hr translating medical documentations from Spanish to English and vice versa.  She does it from home.
