Bloodwork Sed Rate High

I have a sed rate in the mid 40's. My doctor says she is not too concerned about it. But, should I be?  I am reading that over 40 is not a good thing. Thinking about getting another opinion.

Re: Bloodwork Sed Rate High

  • I don't know of one physician on these boards.  You really shouldn't be seeking medical advice from us.

  • I will be seeing another doc or calling mine again. I guess I am more or less wondering if anyone else has had a high number before.
  • i'm gonna sound stupid but what does sed rate mean?

  • oh ok.  I've never had it done so I'm no help to you but it's never bad to get a 2nd opinion especially when it comes to your health.

If you don't trust your doctor when she says there's no reason to be concerned, then maybe it's time to find a new doctor who's opinion you trust.
  • Usually it is a sign of some type of infection. It could be indicative of many things.

I am getting checked out by another doctor this week for a second opinion. I don't like that the first doctor said it's not too much of a concern. I still don't want to ignore the fact that it is elevated.

You should get a 2nd opinion. However, docs usually look at test results in conjunction with other symptoms or concerns. For example, someone may have high blood pressure but be a healthy person. I have a large spleen, but I am healthy. Some people just have higher or lower than usual results and everyone is different. Another example is that the human body temp is 98.6, but my normal temp is always closer to 98. You have to consider the whole person and what the rest of the picture looks like. But, if you're worried, go to another doctor.
  • I found out that I have sinusitis. Could be why my sed rate was a little high. My doc put me on Amoxicillin.
