After watching Blackfish on Saturday, I remembered how much I really do love a good documentary.

I need some suggestions. What are your favourites? I'm open to pretty much anything.

  • Not sure if this is what you are looking for but because it is so over the top rediculous and something I personally just find facinating (Fundamentalist Christians)- Jesus Camp

I enjoyed it. Some parts were hard to watch. I'm not a big fan of Sea World and most zoos anyway so while I agreed with most that was said, there is always two sides to every story.

  • If you like ballet, _First Position_ was really interesting.  (My daughter loved it, too!)   Your little girl might be a bit too small for it, though. ;)

  • We really liked Jiro Dreams of Sushi and if you have any interest in video games, Indie game I think it's called was very good.

  • One I haven't watched yet, but really want to when I have time to concentrate on it is Ken Burns documentary Prohibition. I'm totally fascinated with everything that went on during that time period.

  • Who Killed the Electric Car? was very good, but it will likely incense you over the automakers and gas lobbyists.  I'm still mad about it and it was years ago (but I also have one of the EV1s in the museum so I have a daily reminder of the outcome on that one).

Pretty much anything that Ken Burns does is outstanding.

  • Jiro Dreams of Sushi is amazing!  I also love the Planet series- Planet Dinosaur is my daughter's favorite and quite fascinating.

  • Some that haven't been mentioned yet that I have enjoyed:  The Invisible War, The Fog of War, Mugabe and the White African, Knuckle, and Super Size Me.

I second Restrepo and Jiro Dreams of Sushi, they are great for totally different reasons.

Jenn's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • We Steal Secrets (about the Wikileaks founder) was surprisingly riveting.
I also really enjoyed Winged Migration when I saw it in the theater.
My favorite place on earth: The Amargosa Valley.

  • We watch a lot of documentaries, and especially ones about food, it seems.

DH was obsessed with this one origami documentary, and we've watched it so many times now.  it's called Between the Folds.

I agree that Restrepo was great, as was the Business of Being Born.  Craigslist Joe was really neat, and I'm fascinated by any kind of religious fanatic, so I also liked Jesus Camp.

For food shows, Forks Over Knives was really, really eye-opening, and I recommend it to everyone.  Also, Food Inc., King Corn, Farmageddon, Hungry for Change, Dive. . .

The Botany of Desire was fabulous, too, but I'm really into plants.

And Marley, the Bob Marley biography, is a go-to for background on cleaning days in our house.
  • I love a bunch of the ones already mentioned, but one of my favorites is 4 Little Girls about the 4 girls murdered in a church in Birmingham in the early 60s.

I've been on the fence about watching Blackfish. I'm so sensitive, I don't know if I'll be able to handle it.

  • I really enjoyed Murderball and Waiting for Superman
  • One of the best documentaries I have seen was The Staircase. I'm still conflicted on what I think about it. Paradise Lost is so good, and there are 3 movies that take you through a bizarre and horrible crime in a small town, and the falsely accused boys that were almost put to death. Very Young Girls was really eye  opening.

Others I have enjoyed: The Imposter, Queen of Versailles, The Business of Being Born, Forks over Knives, Religulous, Catfish, The Cove (although enjoyed isn't really the word, since it was incredibly hard to watch).
  • Microcosmos is really cool too!

  • DH and I recently watched Somm. It follows 3 guys as they study for and take their exam to become a Master Sommelier (wine expert). It's crazy how many things these guys can smell and taste in wine!

I'm loving all of these recs. I'm adding whatever I can find to my Netflix right now!
