JKR's thoughts on Hermione & Ron (sp)

I have to say that I'm surprised to read this. When reading for the first time I kinda thought there'd be a Hermione/Harry relationship but I love her relationship with Ron.

In a new interview conducted by Emma Watson, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling drops a bombshell: She regrets putting Ron and Hermione together.

The shocking revelation came in the new issue of Wonderland, of which Watson is a guest editor this month. The comments were obtained by The Sunday Times.

Rowling says that she should have put Hermione and Harry together in the Harry Potter series instead of Hermione and Ron, according to the publication’s headline, which reads, “JK admits Hermione should have wed Harry.”

“I wrote the Hermione/Ron relationship as a form of wish fulfillment,” she says. “That’s how it was conceived, really. For reasons that have very little to do with literature and far more to do with me clinging to the plot as I first imagined it, Hermione ended up with Ron.”

“I know, I’m sorry,” she continued, “I can hear the rage and fury it might cause some fans, but if I’m absolutely honest, distance has given me perspective on that. It was a choice I made for very personal reasons, not for reasons of credibility. Am I breaking people’s hearts by saying this? I hope not.”

Watson didn’t seem shocked by these comments and agreed with her. “I think there are fans out there who know that too and who wonder whether Ron would have really been able to make her happy.”

Rowling also says that Ron and Hermione would have needed “relationship counseling.”

We obtained these comments via a preview The Sunday Times posted on Twitter. More may be shared in the full article.

This is the first we’re hearing about Watson interviewing Rowling for Wonderland, and we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for the full interview.

As fans are aware, Ron and Hermione raised two children: Rose and Hugo.

Ron and Hermione: Do you agree it was a mistake?

In 2011, Rowling revealed that she “seriously considered” killing Ron. Poor guy hasn’t had good revelations come out about him in this post-Potter world.

Thanks to The Sunday Times’ Twitter and Marine for the tip.

Re: JKR's thoughts on Hermione & Ron (sp)

  • I think it would have been incredibly cliche for Hermoine and Harry to end up together.  I was actually pleasantly surprised to find out that it wasn't written that way.
I agree with this 100%.  I really liked the Hermoine/Ron relationship.  Sure, they weren't an absolutely perfect match and "would have needed relationship counseling" but really, what couple out there has perfect, smooth sailings all the time?  The fact that their relationship had flaws made it more realistic.

  • I agree, would have been incredibly cliched for Harry and Hermione to have ended up together, and I would have been disappointed! I think the Hermione/Ron relationship works really well - I love how it all builds up to that point, think you can almost see where it is going from book 4 or so.
  • Well Twitter certainly had a meltdown over the comments that's for sure.

I loved the Ron & Hermoine relationship.  For someone who was always coming in 2nd (or 3rd, 4th, or 5th) compared to the people in his life, I loved that he got the girl in the end.

    Ditto!

I agree that Harry/Hermione would have been very cliche. I like that Harry and Ginny were together, but that it was secondary to his defeating Voldemort, which is what he should have been focusing on. If he was with Hermione so much during book 7 and he had that and the horcruxes to deal with then I just wonder what role Ron would have played or if we would have been reading too much about H/H and not enough about all three. Ron and Hermione's relationship was building up for so long that it becomes a major part of the books, without overshadowing them.

ETA: Plus, I love that Harry and Hermione could just be friends. They were both only children and totally new to the wizarding world and they became like brother and sister toward the end.

  • I don't like the idea of harry/hermione. Ron ♡ Hermione 4eva
  • Ditto everything everyone else has said.

I also don't think Harry and Hermione would have worked. Their personalities are much too strong and I think they'd have actually needed more counseling than Ron and Hermione. I think Ron is perfect for Hermione. He can support and partner with her while allowing her to shine in her own right. I think Harry/Hermione would have been too Brangelina.

  • I thought the coupling of Ron and Hermione seemed natural...where as Harry and Hermione would have been cliche and almost forced.  To me Ron and Hermione balance each other...he keeps her more laid back and she reminds him to be serious sometimes.

  • I think it's super annoying that she said this publicly, and, honestly, it makes me lose some respect for her. She has the right to think whatever she wants about her stories, but she had the choice to write them however she wanted and she made her choice. What is to be gained by saying this now? Just think it in your own head and go on with your life.

HP might be something that happened in the past for her, but so many fans live in this world every single day. It sucks of her to say this, IMO.
This exactly. No takesies-backsies. You had your chance to do it that way, and it felt right, so why ruin it now?

    It's stupid.

For me this is going to depend on context. We don't have the full question and quote yet so depending on what Exactly the question is this may not bother me. If she is aski a direct question if you had to do it over would you put R&H together) I don't expect her to lie to protect her readers feelings. So I'll wait and see.

  • This really annoyed me because I love Harry and Hermione's friendship, it was refreshing to see a male and female friendship prominently displayed that didn't end up being a romance.  I agree she should just shut her mouth about it, she's written the book, she got her chance.  This annoyed me all weekend long.

  • Also keep in mind she wa talking to someone she's known personally for a long time, it's entirely possible that at this point of the 'interview' it was more of a convo between friends and she was less circumspect in what she was saying. Out of context quotes can be really misleading chill out until we get the full context and tone.

  • I would have been super disappointed if Harry and Hermione ended up together, to the point that the ending would have been a MAJOR letdown for me.

  • JKR is entitled to her opinions... I think she is even entitled to voice them!

But, I disagree with her opinion on this one.  :P    I think she wrote these books perfectly.

I, too, loved that Harry and Hermione were just friends.  Hermione and Ron are an interesting couple......   And Harry and Ginny?  I am happy with them, too.  Especially because by marrying Ginny Harry got to become a real member of an awesome family.

If he had married Hermione?  He would still be an orphan.  Even if the Grangers would never have had their memories wiped out, I don't think that having two dentists as ILs would have been has healing to Harry as having Arthur and Molly.

  • I don't care about this for the same reason I don't care about fan fiction.  In my mind, the story exists the way the author wrote it at that point in time.  No other opinions, even the author's later opinions, matter to me in the least.

UO, but I never felt the Ron-Hermione thing. I don't think she was a good match for either of them.
