Medications and Pregnancy

I want to ask about some medications and pregnancy. I am currently on Lamictal and Wellbutrin. My psychiatrist says no way (especially lamictal) on being on them while pregnant, but my GYN says wellbutrin is something we have to think about and that Lamictal is fine. Everything I have read says that it is up to the doctor and patient's decision.

I am on Metformin (850mg 2xdaily) for PCOS and going to see a fertility doc about shots because we've already been through 5 cycles of clomid. I am going to discuss with them, but wanted to know if any of you have experience with these medications and pregnancy.

Re: Medications and Pregnancy

  • None of us here have been pregnant yet. And the ones that have, have lost their babies. Try GP moms or the bump.
  • Since they are psychiatric meds I would follow the psychiatrist's directive. They've had extensive training on particular meds and how they effect the body. Just my 2 cents.

This. I would trust the psych's advice. Did they suggest some alternate meds that might be safe?

  • @lb1117 I believe you've researched this a bit. Maybe you can provide some guidance to OP?

Seriously? It's fine to point out alternate places OP can get more answers, but being rude for the sake of being rude is not cool.

OP, I don't have an answer but there are pregnant women here, there are women that have had children already here, and there may be women TTC that have researched this themselves. I hope someone has some insight to offer.

    not entirely true. calm down.

you definitely need to come off of the first med. i was also on it and had to come off of it when i got pregnant finally. as for wellbutrin, i'm not sure, but i don't think it's ok to take. you might be able to discuss zoloft, but generally speaking there isn't much that is ok to take. my ob said that we would put me on zoloft if i really, really felt it was necessary, but that she wanted to get through as much of the pregnancy as possible if we could. she had cleared me to take a category B medication for my migraines (imitrex), so i know that she wasn't a very conservative doctor overall. this told me that there was something about the zoloft & others that might be a bit more concerning to take.

  • also, it's something you should discuss with your ob rather than your RE. for instance, my RE is far more conservative than my ob was. he wants me off all meds, even the ones the ob had cleared me on. the RE is educated in getting you pregnant but not really on pregnancy as a whole. trust your ob on the latter.

  • My apologies OP, my answer was in bad taste.
  • I have done some research on the different meds. Most anti-depression and anti-anxiety aren't ok to take. I don't know about the first med you mentioned, but I do know that welbutin is on the no-no list.

I am currently taking zoloft. It was suggested to me at my initial RE consult, again by my midwife, and yet again by my PCP who prescribed it. Between all of those, I felt it was ok. Zoloft, I believe, it one of the most common ones to be on during pregnancy. OP, hope this helps a little bit.

  • I'd also look into Latuda - it's a class B for pregnancy but I don't know if it would be correct for your symptoms... I use it as a mood stabilizer.

  • I am taking Lamictal as well. Mine is for seizures, and I have talked with my doctors several times about it and after going over trying a few this is the one they all have told me seems to be the safest while ttc. It has a less chance, more like 3% for any defects, just as there is always a chance regardless. I have no idea about the wellbutrin but since you will most likely need to stay on your medication just talk to them and ask lots of questions. If they know you are even thinking about TTC then they will help you get on the safest of meds. I have gone over it and after doing research about it, Lamictal was the best option for me. I hope you find what you look for. xo

  • I think I am just going to ween off of all medication.
Pamela Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest!Visit The Nest!
  • I would ween under doctors care. If you do it incorrectly it could be harmful.
  • Please do not quit taking those meds without consulting your doc.

  • Please please please do not take yourself off of the medications without a doctor's opinion. I work with several psychiatrists who would not advise doing it yourself. You are looking at potentially damaging and harmful side effects. Talk with your psychiatrist for their orders and your concerns.

  • Probably not the best idea unless you are doing so under a medical professional's care. Be smart about this.
  • Don't wean yourself off! Not good. Definitely need to taper off under a doc's supervision. It can take months to properly come off a medication. Trust me.. been there, done that.

Definitely discuss with your doc. Some meds definitely need to be stopped, but there are some meds that are ok if the benefits of the meds far outweight the costs of coming off of them. For example, a person with a panic disorder may need to be on some type of medication through pregnancy as NOT being on a med and suffering through panic all the could have more of a detrimental effect on a baby. All that to say, definitely discuss options with your doc, and maybe get a second (or third!) opinion. And pleeeeease don't wean yourself off! No good can come of that! Good luck!

This is me. Please, please, please, consult a doctor before stopping ANY of these meds. The weaning process needs to be carefully monitored if that's what you choose to do. You may also find that you are healthier on them. Don't do anything without consulting a dr.
