Tests

Hi Ladies!

Hope you had a fabulous weekend!

I wanted to ask if there were some tests I could have done with my doctor to ensure that I'm fertile/everything is working right?  I guess I don't know what they would be called.  I'm a little nervous because I've started to use OPK's and yet, I can't get that second line to come through vibrantly, I just always get the 1 dark one, and 1 really faint one.  Does that mean I'm not ovulating?  Can it sometimes take awhile to start ovulating after coming off the pill?

Re: Tests

  • Remind me how long you've been off BCPs/TTC?

OPKs can be tricky. Some women have a very short surge window and it's easy to miss it. If you're up for temping, it can give you a much clearer picture of whether or not you're ovulating. OPKs can show your body is gearing up to O, but then it never does (this is a case with a lot of the ladies with PCOS getting + OPKs but not Oing). Doing your BBT at the same time every morning will give you a definite temp rise after you've O'd.

  • Most insurances only cover testing after you have been trying for a year (or 6 months if you are over 35). It can take up to a year for your body to regulate after coming off birth control.

  • What cycle day (CD) are you on? It just may be possible that you haven't O'd yet, some ladies always have a faint line, some fade in, and some just show up when they ovulate.
Like PP asked, how long have you been off the pill? It's possible you are still regulating.
Temping is the only way you know for sure if you have O'd, but it's not something most people like to rush into.
I enjoy temping because it lets me know where I am in my cycle and when AF is going to show up. (My temp ALWAYS drop the morning of AF)

    Hope this helps. GL!
  • I've been off the pill since October, after having been on it for 11 years.
  • I'm not saying this to be mean or snarky or anything like that. But you're not going to get different answers from us then you did a couple weeks ago. Read TCOYF. As uptown said, you might not find a doctor willing to do any testing on you yet since you're 31 and only trying for about 6 months. If you are getting your period regularly there might not be much a doctor will do before you hit 1 year. Also, temping is the only way to confirm ovulation. OPK's help you to find out when it might be coming, but you can miss your surge as lucky said. Since you clearly are getting very antsy about this, I would definitely recommend to start temping so you can help pinpoint when you ovulate. Once you do, you'll have a better idea of when to start using OPK's to get the positive you're looking for.

  • And an aside-
    Give support = get support.
I haven't seen you around since your first post. You might want to jump in a little more often.
I understand that life gets in the way sometimes, BUT the ladies here who get the most support try to jump in and give support every few days.
  • I'm sorry to post the same questions in here, I'm just trying to ask women who have more experience with these issues than I do, so I'm sorry if I'm pissing people off.  All of this is new to me, and I'm merely trying to get support and have my stupid questions answered so that I don't have to spend unncessary money and time in a doctor's office.

  • If you keep asking the same questions you will more than likely get the same answers.
  • No one responded to you rudely or even snark-ily. I'm not sure why you're defending yourself and apologizing for pissing people off. We are all just giving you suggestions and trying to help.

  • If you've asked these questions before, you've almost certainly been referred to Fertility Friend's tutorials and the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I would highly recommend at least going through FF's tutorials and FAQs. They made the concept of temping far easier for me to understand and start doing. Up until then, I really had no idea what my body was doing, since I had irregular and longer cycles.

  • Unless you are lying to your doctor about when you stopped BCPs, they likely won't do any testing. It can take up to a year to regulate. Also, once you've regulated it can take up to a year for a healthy couple to get pregnant. (Sometimes longer.) I suggest you take some time to educate yourself about how your body works. Knowing that will help you greatly. TCOYF is a great reference, but reads like a text book. FF's tutorials helped me a lot. Getting pregnant isn't as easy as people think it is. Honestly, it's amazing the human population hasn't died out those little spermies have to fight like hell to even get to the cervix. I am sure glad I'm not a sperm!
  • If you want to get technical, @bruinsbabe33, you one were a sperm! ;-)
  • Only half of me!
  • Like the pps already said.. FertilityFriend.com, TCOYF, participating on this board (key word: participating). It can take a healthy couple with no issues and with good timing up to a year to get pregnant. If you reach the 1 year mark or 6-8 months (if you have a known issue like not ovulating, PCOS, etc), you can ask your doc to refer you to an RE and have bloodwork done to test everything (they'll know what to test for), have an HSG, all kinds of fun internal sonograms, SA for your DH, and all kinds of various uncomfortable, painful, and awkward tests done. See what fun it is?  Really, unless you know there is an issue, don't borrow trouble.  You're only a few months in... you need to give it some time.

And yes, it CAN take people awhile to ovulate after getting off the pill. I got off the pill in October of 2008 and I JUST had two cycles where I ovulated on my own. Sooo yeah... 5 years. Not the norm though. Some people are lucky enough to regulate immediately, some take a few months, a year, or multiple years.

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.
