Any one ditch cable?

Our cable bill with Comcast is astronomical.  Anyone ditch cable and can school me on Roku or other streaming video options?  We have a smart TV in our family room, which I have streamed Amazon Prime Instant Video on and can do netflix and hulu, but that doesn't help me out for the TV in the kids' playroom.

Is there a way to still get local channels?

Re: Any one ditch cable?

  • We did. Well we kept the very basic stations because it is really inexpensive. We have a roku in 1 room, wii u in one and play station in another so all our tvs have ability to use streaming.

We had Netflix already. We also already had amazon prime. When we ditched we got Hulu plus. Not sure we really need Hulu but its nice to catch basic channel shows we may have missed during the week.

We are fine without it. We rarely watched anything other than basic cable anyways. We didnt have premium channels to begin with and would just watch those shows through Netflix. There is 1 show I watch on bravo (top chef) that I buy through amazon prime.

I really don't miss it. I would only watch stuff out of boredom and would usually be stupid stuff anyways. Netflix streaming has enough of that now! And anytime I really wanted to watch something I could never find anything I really wanted so it felt like a waste!

  • Oh and where I live yes there is a way to keep local stations. I don't remember how much it is but it's inexpensive. We have our local abc CBS NBC fox CW and PBS

  • I haven't but you can pick up local stations through a digital antenna.
  •  You could get local stations with a digital antenna. We do that with our lake house. We're over 30 miles from the towers and still get all the stations, and they're clear and HD.

We keep debating it. We have a roku on one tv, appletv on another and chromecast on the a third. They all offer a bunch of streaming services, but we've tried out different ways of streaming content from our computer, and Roku seems to be the best at that, though we like chromecast's airplay feature best.

Between Hulu and netflix and an antenna you should be good.

I'm trying to convince DH to switch, but he's not willing to give up Disney Junior for the kids yet :) We haven't found an adequate replacement for it that's affordable.

Lishie what shows do they watch on disney jr?
I know Netflix has Jake and never land pirates. There's also an app for Disney jr that they can watch some shows. It's not a ton but it makes dd happy. She likes Sophia and Doc Mcstuffins and can at least watch some this way. You can also watch some episodes just online too.

  • We haven't, but I'd like to. DH watches a lot of sports, though, and I haven't found a good replacement for that.

The Disney Jr app - you have to have some sort of cable provider. I have to enter my comcast info to get that to work. So if you keep a basic local package, you could probably still use the app:) It's nice because you can either play whatever is playing live or you can go through the shows and pick episodes.

This is exactly why I don't think we could ever ditch cable.  I mentioned it to DH once, and by the look he gave me, I knew to never bring it up again!  haha!

Michael loves the app, my fear was that if we went cableless, though I guess I could be sneaky and use my dad's account.

Steve and I don't even know where the sports channels are on our cable, so that's not holding us back. 's all Disney oriented.

He's in the process of building a "media server" for the lake. It's all being shipped to my office this week. I'm afraid, very afraid of what's coming. :)

  • We have an Apple TV our our bedroom TV and a Blu-Ray player in the living room. We could probably see everything we want on Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime, but I love my DVR. I love that I never have to think about what's new or keep track of what is on when. I just set-up a series recording and it does the rest. It's not perfect, but it saves me time and energy.

That said, we have the lowest level cable package that has HD channels and the DVR. No premiums.

Hmmm...for the Disney jr app I'm pretty sure I didn't enter any info. I don't know any of our cable account stuff honestly since dh deals with it. I think if you don't enter info you can still get some shows for free. I'll have to look when I get home how I have it set up.

  • We haven't had cable in about five years.  Our digital antenna gets the local networks plus Qubo (kids programming), CW and a similar network, and a few other randoms.  Netflix and Hulu Plus fill in the gaps - we run those through a PS3.

Do you have a Wii or Playstation you can hook up to your tv in the playroom?  You should be able to stream through those.

I just checked the app on my phone and our cable provider isn't even an option listed. It says, if not listed you can still watch but fewer episodes. There's like 7 different show options including Jake Sophia and Doc. I think there is only 1 episode each available but I do think they switch them out at times because I know dd has watched different ones

  • we are considering apple tv. from what was explained to me, there are apps for the sports (ie, NHL, MLB, NFL). you buy the app for the season and that allows you to watch the sporting events. this is what i need to look in to more-how much those apps are and what it allows.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!
