Without Power - WWYD?

As of about 30 minutes ago, DH texted to tell me that we are still without power (thanks to the ice storm that came through in the wee hours of the night) and he was taking our dog over to his parent's house a few miles away where they DO have power. My dad lives about 20 minutes away, and he's still without power as well. A local news station just reported that our power company stated that customers without power as of this afternoon might not be getting it back all that soon:

PHILADELPHIA - February 5, 2014 (WPVI) -- PECO said more than half a million customers were still without power by Wednesday afternoon and some of those customers could be in the dark for days to come.

PECO was reporting about 590,000 customers were without power by Wednesday afternoon.

In the most recent breakdown, PECO said there were about 180,000 customers without power in both Chester and Montgomery counties with another 140,000 in Bucks County. A PECO spokesperson said on Action News that some customers could be without power for days, and some could even be without power into the weekend.

While I'm sure my MIL would have no problem making room for us to stay there, we'd probably end up kicking BIL out of his room, since the only free bed in the house is a twin, and he has a full bed. Not to mention, my ILs smoke in the house. FIL is officially checked into the hospital for a few days (he was scheduled for  hip replacement surgery this morning), but MIL will still smoke, and I'm bound to end up breathing it in and getting it all into my clothing if we stay there (no matter how aware she is of my sensitivity to it and how much she might attempt to smoke in a room away from me).

I'm wondering if we should just shell out for a hotel room tonight. Or even brave the cold at my dad's house; they have a nice comfy guest room, full extra bathroom, and a gas generator to run a few things.

Re: Without Power - WWYD?

  • Oooh, that's a tough one.  I would go out to dinner with H somewhere that has power, browse around a few stores or go to a movie till later at night, then go sleep only at the IL's since they have power.

Do the IL's know your pregnant?  Would she smoke outdoors instead if you asked?

If it were me, I would choose anywhere that you didn't have the risk of being around 2nd hand smoke. A house where someone (multiple people?) smokes inside regularly is going to have a massive amount, and not only is your super smeller going to to go crazy, but I'd be leery of being around that for more than an hour or two in 1st tri. Then again, I'm pretty (ok, super) paranoid about cigarette smoke :)

  • I would get a hotel. I am extremely sensitive to smoke and would be sick as a dog. Why stay at your dads if they don't have power you may as well go home. I vote hotel.

  • Do you have a fire place? Can you stay at your house? I would stay there or with your dad (if he had a way to stay warm).

  • We don't have a fireplace.

My dad does, but he said he only had the wood already in the bin inside, so I don't know how long that will last. He also has a generator to run a few things here and there, and a gas stove for making food.

MIL knows I'm pregnant and sensitive to smoke. I'm with all of you on hating to be around it at all, especially now. They've said before: it's their house and they'll smoke inside.

  • I would go to Dad's. I'm sure being around smoke for a day or two won't do anything but if I had a child that developed asthma I would always wonder and be bitter towards MIL.

  • I think I would opt for a hotel. I can't handle smoke and I wouldn't want to freeze either.

Putting on my judgey pants here... wow, that's incredibly selfish. Especially since it involves their grandchild!

They smoke/have smoked around all their children and grandchildren as they were/are growing up. They wouldn't think twice about continuing to smoke around me just because I'm pregnant now.

That sucks. I guess it's their right, but I'm sorry you have to deal with it. I understand people didn't know any better years ago and their kids/grandkids very well may have turned out just fine.  But now we know the dangers and I side-eye anyone who smokes around pregnant women (when they don't have the option to "escape") and children.
