One Ring Scam

With all the posts on FB and the articles online about this scam, I have to ask-does anyone look up a number before calling them back in it's not in your phone book? I get that this is news people should know about but if I don't recognize your number in my phone, very often I just send it to voicemail, especially if it's not an area code I recognize. I figure if you really want to reach me, you'll leave a voicemail and if you don't, I'll just look the number up before calling it back (like if it doesn't show up in the white pages but I recognize the area code).
Whether or not you find your own way, you're bound to find some way. If you happen to find my way, please return it, as it was lost years ago. I imagine by now it's quite rusty.”

Re: One Ring Scam

  • I do all the time.  I won't answer a phone call if I don't know the number.

  • I never call them back, but that would explain the phone call that showed up on my phone from Grenada the other day...

    It's slippery as waterweed.
  • I always Google first. If it isn't obvious who it was, I never call back.

I've had a few randoms call me.  A cupcake shop in VA was one.

What's this scam? I've been watching the news, but I don't think I saw this.

@ShShne322 you get a call from Aruba, Granada and a few other places in the Caribean. They call and your cell phone rings once. If you call back, you get charged these outrageous fees and I think it's an adult phone line.

Also, thanks guys for validating I'm not a weirdo.

  • I never answer if I don't recognize the number.  If you want me, you'll leave a message.  I will sometimes do a search for the number just because I'm curious but I never call it back.

Ah I see.  I think this has happened in the past, right? Like maybe 5 years ago?

This. I would never call back a number that didn't leave a VM. People do this?

  • I frequently google numbers if I don't recognize an area code or am not expecting a regional call. I will pick up though, if I happen to see it ringing. (I keep it silent all the time.)

  • I don't answer if it's a number I don't recognize. If there's no voicemail, I don't call back either. If whatever prompted you to call wasn't important enough to leave a message then it's probably not important for me either.

We answer if we don't recognize the number. Mh sometimes gets tips at home. Otherwise we probably wouldn't.

I rarely get calls on my cell phone that aren't work-related or from my immediate family.  And I don't even answer those half the time.  My home phone, I'm not even sure why we even have one anymore.  I never get up to check who is calling, answer it, or listen to the messages.

  • Hmmm, maybe that's what that call I had last week from "Dominica" was about. I wasn't gonna answer it and they didn't leave a message so no call back from me. My phone has a song not a ringer so I have no idea if it was just one ring.
  • Ha, I've been getting these calls! I don't pick up and wouldn't call back, but it amuses me every time it pops up that Antigua is calling. I've telling DH that they must be calling because they want us to take a trip there... he's not buying it.

This.  I always google.  I had a call the other day that I googled while it was ringing and realized it was my Drs office so I answered.

  • It would never even occur to me to call back an unknown number. I always just assume it's a telemarketer. But I do answer for those rare cases like last week when the surgeon's office was calling because they had an available space and wanted to know if I could come that day.

However, my phone is still listed under my XH's name. It's a prepaid account, so I usually forget all about it, until someone calls and asks for him. Easiest way to get out of telemarketing.

  • If I don't recognize the number I don't answer it - especially if it's a crazy area code! If it's a local number then I do the reverse search on whitepages, but even then I still rarely call back if there's been no message left. I just like to be nosy to see who it may have been.
