Re: Biggest Loser Controversy (Spoiler)

  • I don't watch BL, but I did see the buzz. It makes me so sad, she is way too thin now IMO. There was a picture of what she looked like before the finale and she looked so much healthier and happier. I'm not her doctor, and I don't know what her natural frame is, so I could be wrong. But her face, shoulders, knees, everything is like a paper stretched over bone.

Here's the picture I was talking about. She looks so beautiful and healthy here:

  • @goodwolf She does look healthy there.

It's so sad that unfortunately weight in some people can be one extreme or the other.  I'm really hoping that they get her in touch with someone to help her through the mental part of her journey.

  • I feel like she did what she needed to do to win. I'm hoping she'll put on some more muscle and eat more or whatever she needs to keep herself healthy. I doubt she really plans to stay as skinny as she is. There was just no other way for her to win. In that way, I get it.

That's true, I hadn't thought about the competition factor. I do hope she can even out with more muscle/fat as needed to be healthy!

  • The only thing that matters is that she's happy AND healthy. I agree that she looks a little too thin, but if she's in a healthy BMI range for her height and weight and all her other numbers/levels are pointing to healthy, I think people need to back off.  I'm sure she already has a messed up body image from being overweight; let's not give her a reason to hate her new body as well. Any kind of shaming, either fat- or skinny- is wrong! I know what "sickly thin" looks like and this isn't it.  I certainly hope she doesn't feel like she needs to lose more and agree with @brij2006 that some professional mental help might do her some good.

  • The show has been criticized in the past for encouraging not so healthy practices for losing weight. And often contestants push themselves past a realistically maintainable weight in order to win, and then gain a little weight afterwards.

I'm not a doctor so I can't say if she's healthy or not. But I don't like the argument that she "looks" too skinny.

  • The video showed that her BMI is in the 17's.  The healthy range starts in the 18's for her height.

I think that's where a lot of people are getting concerned.  However, the Dr in the interview stated that she can also be a healthy 105 pound person.  Hopefully that is the case.

I can also see where she lost the weight to win.  Ali from a few years ago ended in the 120's and won it.  She spoke at a local event and said that she got to that weight to win and was now in the 130's where she felt was a healthier weight for her.

I had read about her BMI being under the normal range, too.

@PandPMeant2B you bring up a really good point about not shaming based on any body type, and I realized I have to check myself on that. Yes, a 60% weight loss is big change, but honestly I am not even close to a doctor and can't say if she is in a healthy range one way or the other, especially based on looks. Thank you, you said it very well!

  • @GoodWolf, I hope you didn't take what I said personally. It was really just a general statement, not an attack. But I'm glad you got something from it.

Oh no, not at all! I just applied it to myself, it was very well said and not attack-ish at all :)

    This, exactly!

I actually feel a little bad for her.  I'm sure she experienced a lot of negativity for being overweight and now she's getting negativity for all the hard work she did.  I just don't think anyone should put anyone else down for their appearance, whether it's weight related or not.  As long as she's happy, her doctors say she's healthy and continues on a good path, then more power to her.

  • I agree with a lot of the points you all have already brought up. I think she did what she needed to do to win, although I did feel like her facial features looked a little gaunt in the finale. That being said, I suspect that now that the competition is over, she'll focus more on just being healthy and feeling good. I think she looks gorgeous and very proud of her accomplishment!
