Re: It's Monday

  • 1) My weekend was decent, all things considering.  I went to Nashville to visit H, so spent $40 on gas.  We spent about $30 eating out.  I spent another $25 on groceries when I got back.

    2) Yes!  We finally pulled the trigger and bought H a car!  We decided to go with the Accord instead of the Civic because we liked the size.  We also got an absolutely ridiculous deal on it....  probably because we waited until about 7 pm on the last day of the month to buy. Carmax would have been a couple thousand more for a car that was 2 years old and had 15K miles on it already.  We ended up going with the 2014 Accord because it had the upgraded safety features we wanted (ie: back-up camera).  Plus, H puts so many miles on his cars that we wanted to be starting new in the hopes that it lasts longer than his last car did.

We ended up selling his car to carmax because they gave us an offer that was way more than that car should have been worth.  So we felt really good about it!  Monthly payments are comfortable for us, and we should have it paid off before 3 years, no problem.  Heck, even our insurance increase was minimal - it was like $40 more to insure this car for 6 months over the Altima.  So overall, we were extremely satisfied with how it all worked out.  And we have no concerns about this being a family car when that becomes a thing down the road.

    3) My dream job would probably be a travel writer.  It would give me a great excuse to visit all these places in the world that I dream about!  While I'm not a fan of Rick Steves, I have to give the guy credit for coming up with one of the best jobs in the world.

  • 1) How MM was your weekend? Not so good. We spent $30 to make a big batch of buffalo chicken dip for a party H went to last night. That was a stressful shopping trip. We also spent $27 stocking up on his toiletries. We live so far away from the store it makes more sense to have 4 of everything on hand.

    2) Any progress toward goals? We put $1,125 into saving on Friday! We have $3,125 left to save and we should be done on April 1st instead of May 31st like we originally had planned. I can't wait to get back at the SLs.

    3) What is your dream job? I want take over the family business and  run my own daycare. Unfortunately H has chosen a career which makes that impossible. I am coming to terms with losing that dream and I am looking forward to being a SAHM for now. I am going to job shadow a few people here and see if it is anything I am interested in pursuing after our children hit school.

    $25 Chinese food

    $78 Walmart

    Any Progress towards goals?

Not much, but we gave my dad our tax info so we should find out what we get back soon and that will go straight into our house DP fund.

    What is your dream job?

Um, I'm not sure. Don't really have one or havent though about it. In my own fantasy world, I would be to be rich, not working, and just traveling with H.

    1) How MM was your weekend? Not terrible, went to the grocery store and spent $30. We also went out to dinner but that was his treat so I spent a total of $30 all weekend!
    2) Any progress toward goals? Not yet, but I did attend a retirement planning class at work which was helpful! I've also been working on a budget, which I'll hopefully be able to follow and get my FI on board.

    3) What is your dream job? My dream job is to work at a dog rescue. Or own a bar on a beach down south. Neither of which will probably happen, unless I win the lottery ;)
  • 1) How MM was your weekend?

Good- usual groceries and gas. Also ordered a few 4T outfits from ON for DD#1.. she's getting so tall!

    2) Any progress toward goals?
Yes -set up our Roth IRA accounts for 2013 with max contributions on Saturday. Will get 2014 set up with periodic withdrawls in a few weeks. Also will be calling a few lawyers this week to get an appointment set up over DH's February break to get our wills in order. We'll also open our vacation fund with $2,500 at a credit union over February break too.

    3) What is your dream job? Can I say independently wealthy!?  :)  If not, I would love to be able to go back to school for a PhD in Biostatistics.

  • 1) How MM was your weekend?

Overall, it was not that great. I did spend $ on stuff for an oil change (H does it for me), bought some items for the dog, a new snow hat for DD, and bought a new phone case for me. I did save money on DH's new mattress, though. I bought a full size mattress set for $229 and the store where I bought it from makes the mattresses right there. I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

    2) Any progress toward goals?

At the end of each month, my bank gives us back what we spent on foreign ATM fees (we do not pay for the bank ATM rate) up to $15. We did spend $18 on fees, but I was able to get back and put away $15 into my EFund. I also was able to put a little over $600 into debt.

    3) What is your dream job?

My dream job would be to become a well-known city Architect and build anything between Old Victorian Homes (but with a modern twist) to city high-rise buildings and skyscrapers. I've put that dream on hold when I became a mom and currently sit behind a desk, far away from that dream. Maybe one day I'll get back into it.

  • 1- $35 on dinner Friday night.  $1.30 at Redbox.  $25 at Target.  $15 at Hobby Lobby.  $10 at Papa Murphys for super bowl food.  Pretty good this weekend.

    2- No not last week

3- I'm gonna sound totally lame-o but I feel I already am doing my dream job.  I've always wanted to stay at home with our daughter and I still get to freelance my passion.  The only thing that would top it off is to get in a local symphony.

  • 1) How MM was your weekend? Great! spent like $2 at CVS and that was it. Almost didnt leave the house this weekend, which was so needed after a couple busy weeks.

    2) Any progress toward goals? Yep, we have almost paid our savings back for my new van. (The bonus pay check last Friday was awesome for this- it all went towards it) We now have under $300 left to repay, which should be done this month!

    3) What is your dream job? Right now it's SAHM. I love that my little guy is taking a nap on me right now, and we will get to play in a bit when he wakes up. When I return to work in several years, a dream job has always been something like museum curator, or tour guide at a historic site or something like that where I could use my history degree in a different way from teaching. A more realistic dream job would be to get to teach back at the high school I was at last year, I loved it and hope I will at least be able to interview there again.

Meh, okay.  $140 on groceries and $125 on new running shoes.  Both budgeted items, but still sucks to spend it.

    2) Any progress toward goals?
Our mortgage has been approved, and we're just waiting on the title work.  We'll likely be closing on Saturday with the refinance, and then Monday I will be calling in and paying off either 6 of our student loans or H's car with the money that's in our savings.  The lady at the bank said we could just have the $2k Efund in our account and be fine with the refinance, but I want to be safe and have it there just in case.
    3) What is your dream job? Professional traveler.  Or an interior decorator/ home designer.

    1) How MM was your weekend? Ours was good. The only thing we really bought were some groceries ($140), although we did write a big fat check to the bank as well.

    2) Any progress toward goals? We closed on our house on Friday, so that's one big thing we can cross out. Even after utilities and everything we should still be paying only about 1/2 of what we are for our apartment, so that will be exciting. We will have some big projects to work on though so that will cost some money (replacing windows, new roof, etc.), but it should make it easier for us to save.

    3) What is your dream job? Honestly, I'd love to work on a major political campaign in some capacity or another. I did lots of volunteer work and several internships with some political offices in Colorado, and I'd really like to get back into that (haven't found anything interesting in that field since moving to GA, but maybe sometime). If I couldn't do that, I'd love to teach at the university level--either history or political science.

Edit:Thought of another job I'd love if I had the startup money to do so--I'd love to open up my own bookstore. Someplace comfy with lots of good books and coffee. If only! :)
  • Happy Monday!

    1) It was actually pretty good! We spent ~$150 on groceries on Friday but we hadn't gone in a long time and probably won't again for awhile. Other than that....nada.

    2) Hmm...I found out on Friday I got a small yearly raise of 2.4%. It's small potatoes but every little bit helps, right?

    3) Dream jobs include working for a zoo/wildlife rehab, be a veterinarian if I had the brains and $ for the schooling, or a wildlife photographer!

  • 1) We spend $125 on groceries for us, and for our super bowl party.  We hadn't shopped in several weeks. I filled up both gas tanks totaling $70. I need to get a new tire on one car.

    2) Only goal is retirement. We funded our ROTH and investments already for the year. We also gave all our paperwork to our CPA. We have a big refund coming.

    3) Judge. I took the LSAT and did very well but I refuse to go to law school. Besides I make more as a paralegal then most of my friends who are out of law school and I'm not $100K in debt. Before I got my certificate, I got a BA in Broadcast Journalism. I worked in the industry for four years. The verdict: Worst job in the world.
  • 1) How MM was your weekend? Um, well we got a TV (which we budgeted for), $30 for applebee's, $90 groceries...

I also ended up in the ER Saturday night.  So that can be anywhere from $0-350.  While shopping I started to get stabbing pains in my lower right abdomen.  After 2 hours I started to worry and called my OB on-call who told me to go and rule out ectopic pregnancy.  Lucky, baby is ok and where he/she is suppose to be, measuring on time at 7 weeks, and we got to hear the HB for a few seconds (150 bpm).  Honestly, after they told me baby was ok, I really didn't care why I was in pain.  They didn't think it was appendix or gall bladder and said to come back if I started a fever with it.  It's feeling better today, I rested up yesterday.

    2) Any progress toward goals?  Just increased my amount towards last SL for this month's payment!  YAY!  We are also going tonight to do taxes, so we can figure all that out if we get a refund.

    3) What is your dream job?

I love what I do, and it's really my dream job.  I just can't stand some of the people.

I'm glad everything is ok with the baby! It can get scary at times.  I had some spotting in first tri that totally freaked me out but I went to the doc and she was fine.  They couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler at 11 weeks so they ordered an u/s and the u/s tech found it.  The doctor was of no comfort though when I asked if she was going to be ok, I guess she didn't want me to get my hopes up.  I'm using a different doctor next time.

I'm so glad that everything is ok! That is really scary. Take it easy and rest up!
  • @mana8503 Glad everything is OK with the baby.
  • 1. We did OK. Spend about $50 on groceries. $ 65 on clothes.

    2. None.

    3. My dream job is to be a Mom.
  • 1.  Our weekend was good!  A couple of social events but all was budgeted except that we went a little over on groceries.  It can easily be made up just by spending less next week.

    2.  Yes-sent a couple of hundred dollars to the DP fund, made my first 10% Roth IRA contribution, and picked up extra hour at work on Sunday.

    3.  My current job is pretty darn close to my "realistic" dream job.  I'm an environmental educator, and a job like mine where I can do what I do full time, with benefits and a reasonable wage is a very lucky thing to have.  My "no limits" dream job would be to be a dive instructor in a tropical destination (let's go with Fiji), OR to be a travel food journalist a la Anthony Bourdain (love him!)

mana, like everyone else I'm so glad things with the baby are okay!
  • 1) How MM was your weekend?

Spent more than I wanted too on groceries but will last a few weeks.  Other than that good.

    2) Any progress toward goals?

Got a check for back pay and put it all on the credit card.  Balances on both cards is now $4200 combined.

    3) What is your dream job?

Training horses...my current job close second.
  • 1) Really good, my parents came up to visit for a little and took us out for lunch.

    2) Not really, have to call AT&T to cancel my land line that I thought was done a few months ago.

    3) I would say running a power plant.  I like being a mechanical engineer, but miss the time running the nuclear power plant on a sub.
  • Thanks everyone!  I was trying not to overreact, being a first time mom, but now I'm glad I got checked and eased my mind.

@vlagrl29 - how scary for you!  I'm glad it all worked out!  I would change doctors too.  The hospital we went to has their own maternity ER!  I didn't know about it, I thought it was just labor and delievery.  So they sent me over there.  They were GREAT!  Making me laugh to keep me calm (with H in charge).  I wanted to hug my nurse and thank her when we were done, but I refrained haha.

  • 1. It was pretty good. We spent about $25 on eating out. 2. I finally convinced H that our emergency fund should NOT be invested riskily in the stock market, so I'd say that is an accomplishment. He moved it, so we have an emergency fund now! Yay! Now time to focus on grad school tuition, our Roths and a baby fund. 3. For right now, I have my dream job. :) I'm a press secretary for lawmakers. My big time dream job might eventually be serving as a director of communications for a major city or state agency, but I'm happy for now.
  • 1) How MM was your weekend? It was good. I got my first pay cheque from my new job. I went grocery shopping and spent $130. But we were running low on a lot of staples and paper products and the rest of the grocery shopping this month should be minimal. I also had to make dessert for a superbowl party.

    2) Any progress toward goals? Yes, I started saving for my 2014 taxes as I don't get anything taken off my pay cheques and put an extra $2000 towards my SLs. I've also been in touch with a lawyer regarding having wills made up.

    3) What is your dream job? I'm just starting my dream job but eventually I want to own an optometry practice and have 1-2 associate optometrists working under me.
