Leaky Roof / Drywall / Home Insurance Question

Hi Ladies,
This morning we woke up to a leaky roof and drywall on the floor.  My question is – should I go ahead and file a home insurance claim now, or wait and get the estimates from the roofer and drywall contractor first to see if the total will be more or less than our (pretty high) deductible?  I would appreciate tips from those who have filed a home insurance claim - how long did it take to get the repair done; how much extra time did working with insurance take; etc.
Thanks!

Re: Leaky Roof / Drywall / Home Insurance Question

  • Call your insurance company. If something were to happen later on in the year, this issue would count towards your deductible and then you wouldn't need to pay as much for the other issue if the amount of repairs was to exceed your deductible.

We filed a claim last year. They had a company to our house the same day we filed the claim to take care of the issue, and then an adjuster was out the next day to prepare the paperwork and estimate the amount of money for repairs.  They had the total dollar amount to us two days later and a check in the mail to us to cover the amount past our deductible within a week.  Repairs were then left up to us since we chose the option to select our own contractors. Had we chosen for the insurance company to take care of repairs, they would have withheld the check and paid the companies directly, however, the timetable likely would have been extended.
