Help me with a potentially awkward conversation (pg mentioned, not me)

A few months ago I intentionally cut ties with someone I used to consider a close friend. I've alluded to this a few times here. After she got pg (on "accident" of course), I felt that she was rude and insensitive towards me and continuing that friendship would have been detrimental to my well-being.

At this woman's wedding last summer I met another girl whom I have casually kept in touch with via FB. This person has been trying to get together with me   for months and I am having coffee with her next week. I've kind of been avoiding her, even though she seems like a kind person, b/c I feel that her ties with my former friend could make things awkward. I know they hang out together quite regularly.

I am almost certain that at our coffee date this girl is going to ask me if I've kept in touch with my old friend, etc. I was the MOH in her (former friend's) wedding so I cannot deny that we were close. I don't want to trash-talk her (well maybe I would like to, but probably shouldn't), but I'm also uncertain of how I would respond to such a question.

WWGPD?

  • I think I'd just say that we lost touch and try to leave it at that. I'm sure she'll get that something is up and hopefully not push.

  • That's a challenge. Maybe tell her you guys "had some personal issues that made it difficult to be as close as you were in the past". Or just something like "you know, we really haven't done a great job at staying in touch". If she presses the issue something like "her and I have our relationship, I don't want to drag anyone else into it". I don't know... Those were my first thoughts. Good luck, I hope you enjoy the new friend and avoid an awkward conversation.

  • Yeah, I definitely wouldn't go into specifics. Ditto pps about saying something about losing touch. I was going to suggest saying something like, "We're growing apart," but that seems like it would open the door to questions you don't want to handle from someone you're just casually meeting.

  • I would probably tell her the truth, but do it in a way that doesn't seem like you are trash-talking the old friend.

Do you want the reason to get back to your old friend? Or does she know why you aren't close anymore?

The old friend knows why we aren't close anymore. I was pretty clear with her as to why I was distancing myself.

  • Ditto LittleLady77. I don't think you owe this other woman an explanation. I'm sorry the other person was a crap "friend." Good luck, Flamingo. ((Hugs))
