preparing your body for pregnancy- a few questions / intro post

Hi ladies,
My name is Jenny. I've been married nearly 5 years (at the end of the month!) and my H and I have just bought a house. Once we're fully settled we're going to start trying. I've lurked around this board for years, and thanks to you all I have learned a lot- I did Fertility Friend a few years back for several months, and I plan to get back into it as soon as this month's AF is over.
I'm 32 and DH is 44. We are both overweight. We're both trying to get healthier and in better shape before pregnancy.
I just have a few other questions for you all about getting my body ready for pregnancy.
I am taking prenatal vitamins.
I am starting to eat a healthier diet-drinking more water, eating more fresh fruits and veggies and trying to eat less processed foods. I'm also trying to keep more active. I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should be doing before pregnancy- should I start to try to cut down on coffee? (I don't drink it every day but when I do it's usually 2-4 cups). Are there any other foods I should eliminate BEFORE pregnancy? (sushi, cold cuts etc?)
Any other advice anyone can offer would be much appreciated.
I look forward to being more active on this board.
Thank you and good luck to all who are TTC
~Jenny~

Re: preparing your body for pregnancy- a few questions / intro post

  • Welcome! Congrats on the house!

As far as foods go, I wouldn't bother eliminating any yet. That's a personal choice though. While I was pregnant I still ate cold cuts, sushi and drank coffee. My doctor told me up to 500mg a day was okay. It depends on you and your doctor though. I know some women have to avoid it completely, or drink a lower amount.

As far as advice goes, I think you are on the right track with getting healthy and you are familiar with fertility friend, so I say just enjoy those first few months, have fun and hopefully your journey will be short and sweet! :)

  • Welcome!  It sounds like you are on the right track with getting healthy and have already started tracking your cycles, which are great first steps!

I didn't eliminate caffeine while trying to get pregnant, but that is totally a personal choice!  Good luck!

  • Welcome! Congrats on your new home!

You're off to a good start in preparing to TTC. If your prenatal doesn't contain DHA, I'd suggest picking up a separate fish oil supplement, or finding a prenatal multi that includes everything (mine does).

It's really up to you if you want to eliminate certain foods or caffeine now or wait until you get your BFP. I didn't cut my coffee until my BFP, although I'd gone to half-caff for the most part a few months beforehand. I didn't stop drinking alcohol and I didn't cut out any foods until the BFP either.

I switched to drinking tea in the morning instead of coffee, but that was really because I wanted to be more cautious in the beginning. Most doctors say it's fine to continue drinking up to 16 oz of coffee (200 mg of caffeine) per day if you already drink it regularly. I'll more than likely add a cup back in occasionally once I get a little further along.

    @R.Wilsonny, I don't think that is a flagable offense.

Perhaps the resident troll of this forum should stop saying stupid unhelpful things when people post a valid question on here about TTC. Then maybe it wouldn't be flagged.
  • Nothing to add that hasn't already been said, but wanted to say welcome and GL!

While MH isn't being helpful, flagging her for things that aren't technically abuse can affect your account negatively.
  • Besides all of the great advice given to you already, I think you're doing all the "right" things to get as ready as you can. That being said, welcome, and have fun with it! :-)

I'm so confused. Saying it was fine to get drunk while TTC was considered helpful around here not long ago.

However, it was meant to be funny, not helpful. Anyone who takes it seriously should get a brain transplant. Anyone who doesn't find it humorous should get a personality transplant.

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

I do have a sense of humor but there is nothing humorous about anything that comes from you.
