What do you use to clean your tub?

When we redid the bathroom, DH installed a new tub. It's fiberglass or whatever so I can't use Comet on it like I want to. It says to use "a light detergent". However, I feel like the spray that I have doesn't clean it. (It's softscrub spray or something) I was so tempted yesterday to just use a little Comet on it because I feel like it's not clean. DH said softscrub is even too abrasive. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Re: What do you use to clean your tub?

  • I used to use a spray cleaner and baking soda at our old house, but like your DH, mine says that's to abrasive.  Now I use scrubbing bubbles foaming cleaner.  It works well, and doesn't require much scrubbing on my end.

  • I use Tilex/Scrubbing Bubbles/Clorox that are mildew remover. If there are tough spots, I have used a Mr. Magic eraser, they make a bathroom one, but that was on our old fiberglass tub. On the one in the new house, the spary and a Dobie sponge works just fine.

  • my husband?

I keep kaboom in the bathroom, and it cuts through the soap scum on the tub if left to sit and do its job.  We have an old cast-iron tub from the 60's now and it is all sorts of scratched up/worn out and doesn't get clean like a new tub would.  But we do what we can to keep the ick at bay.
  • I agree with Amanda, you have to let all of them sit for a few minutes before wiping.

Anyone have any helpful tips for horrible shower doors beside "accidently" breaking them when my husband isn't home?;)

What do you mean by "horrible shower doors".  The shower doors in our rental were pretty gnarly when we moved in.

  • Kris, we used to use this stuff called Mean Green Mildew Destroyer on our shower doors.  The fumes are crazy, but it really, really works.   I am pretty sure we got it at Dollar General or Dollar Tree.  The bottle has mean looking eyes on it.  Just spray, let sit for a bit (it's not supposed to dry, if I remember correctly) and then wipe.

    Here it is.

  • Horrible in that they are gold and I hate them but the fact they are too big for the shower and I can never get them "clean" and the mildew in the tracks is a never ending battle.

  • Thanks, I'll try a new kind of spray.  I do let it sit...I spray everything (starting with the sink and then moving inward) and then go back to clean what I sprayed first, and the others sit while I'm cleaning that.
  • my husband?

    This.  ;)

We use some type of foaming spray and let it sit for a while before scrubbing off.  I've also tried a Pinterest method of vinegar + dawn in a spray bottle, which seemed to work really well with soap scum/nasty residue.

Those are really easy to take out and replace with a tension rod shower curtain... does your H have any weekend trips planned?  Best time to remedy such problems :) hehehehe

We have the same kind of tub and it drives.me.nuts. I feel like I have to tell any house guests 'I swear! It's clean!' because it looks yucky.

Kris - we used the Method shower door cleaner when we had shower doors in our apartment. Just spray it on after your shower when things are still damp. It really helped a ton!

Amber - I loved scrubbing bubbles when we had a fiberglass tub:)

I was totally thinking of pulling an "Amanda". Nathan is worried about the holes in the fiberglass, I found a solution for that. We are going to be doing an update once we close on the other house (new vanity, medicine cabinet, painting the wood white or some other color since the tub and toilet are horrible almond, what the hell is wrong with white), so once we do that the gold shower doors will look like hell and I will win. I already have the rod.

  • Holes in the fiberglass<ugly moldy doors. Plus, caulk would camouflage them. Ours was screwed into the dark green tile (which runs floor to ceiling in the entire room) and we just have holes in it now.  Only really see it coming in and out of the shower. it is tolerable.
  • We you this on our acrylic tub/shower http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cramer-Acryl-Star-Acrylic-Cleaner-Bathroom-Polish-/190558900667

It does a really good job and it's gentle.
