OPK's and PCOS question.

I am not sure if any of you remember me. I intro'd back in December but haven't been able to post or comment much recently. For some reason, I can't post on the forums from my home computer, only at work, which means I can only post when it is slow. I apologize for not being able to interact more within the community. I'm going to try to post more during slow periods at work and hopefully get the issue at home fixed sooner rather than later!

I have a question about OPK's and PCOS though. In my original post, I mentioned that I was going to try temping. That really hasn't been working out for me. I don't even have one month's worth of temps because I keep forgetting to temp at all plus I wake up at different times throughout the week. So, I was wondering if any of my fellow PCOS ladies have had any luck with OPK's? I know they don't always read correctly for women with PCOS but I was wondering if it would still be worth a shot to try them?

Re: OPK's and PCOS question.

  • I can only weigh in on temping and how I did it.

I set an alarm separate from the one I use to wake up for work. I set it on my phone for about 5 a.m. That guarantees I always took my temp before my work alarm went off and on the weekends when I didnt need to get up early. It was easy, and i never had trouble falling back tp sleep. If you have a thermometer that "remembers" your last temp, you don't even need to record it when you take it. Just check your thermometer later when you get up and plug it in then!

  • I have PCOS.. OPKs are all but worthless to me. I've tried them over and over and I get false positives. They do work for some women though. Temping is definitely the most helpful thing. Can you set it at an ungodly, early hour of the morning to temp? That's what I do... I temp as early as possible then go back to sleep. And on those days I wake up to pee or whatever and screw up, I just note it on the chart and still temp at the designated time. GL!

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • I have PCOS and OPKs did work for me.  But I did use them along with temping, which is how I knew that they worked.  But there would be some cycles where I get positives three days in a row or where I would get them almost positive, but then they wouldn't quite get there (so I would gear up to o, but not actually o until later).  I think that temping is your best bet and it wouldn't hurt if you wanted to try and do the OPKs with it to see if that works for you.

I have no advice regarding PCOS, but this is what I do for temping. I still "forget" to temp fairly often, where I just wake up later on to find out that I turned off my temping alarm in my sleep. It works out most days, though.

  • OPKs did not work for me until my medicated cycles (I always got a second line, never a positive, though I am completely annovulatory) . Also my cycles were way too long for temping to help me. The calendar was endless and it looked like the rockies.
  • Thanks for the responses, ladies! I'm going to buy a new thermometer that stores my last temp and try setting a super early alarm just for temping. I think I am also going to buy some OPK's to do in conjunction with temping.

My cycles are kind of all over the place (72 days, 38 days, 51 days) but I'm still hoping that they may even out after a few more months on Metformin since it does seem to be helping. Trying to stay positive about it, at least.

  • OPK's give me false positives, but did give me a dark positive during our medicated cycle.  Temping really helps me to know whether or not I've O'd, even though the OPK's give false positives. Like RAB, I set mine for 4am. That way I can just take my temp and fall back to sleep.  Whether I'm getting up at 5 or 7 that day. Having a thermometer that stores the temp also helps immensly.

  • Yeah...I'm sure I will probably get false positives (stupid screwed up hormones!!!). I guess my logic is that if we BD everytime I get a positive, even if it might end up being a false positive, we will have better luck concieving. Does that make sense at or all am I just going a little crazy? And because my DH has to take sudafed to ejaculate properly, timing is even more important.

My next appointment with my obgyn is in May. We will be discussing our next steps towards clomid at that point. She has said we could start before then but my DH has an appointment with a urologist in March to get an SA done so I want to make sure we have those results before meeting with my obgyn again since those results could affect our timeline/next steps.

  • Your logic isn't crazy at all. Although I'd definitely try pairing temping with using the OPKs just do you don't drive yourself too nuts not knowing whether or not you're actually in a 2WW.

Your timeline also sounds very smart. It's absolutely necessary that you've both had at least an SA and HSG done before starting Clomid, so you're smart to wait until at least YH's results come back. I hope they're good!

  • I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the SA turns out well. It would be lovely if at least one fertility related thing would go in our favor, lol.

I definitely plan on speaking with my obgyn about the HSG in May. I'm pretty nervous about it but I know it is a necessary evil.

It definitely is. And as uncomfortable as it is while it's being done, you feel totally fine as soon as it's over. And better to know everything is clear than be wasting cycles taking Clomid if you've got a blockage!
