hopital classes

I'm looking into a class called, Childbirth Education for a planned hospital birth.

they also suggest I take a breastfeeding class.

I know we've discussed this before, but what classed did you take or do you suggest taking?

Re: hopital classes

  • We took....

    * Prepared Childbirth: Lamaze Focus - - This class was great!  Our hospital offers both Natural Birth focused classes and Medicated Birth focused classes.  What I think was super helpful was that even though we chose the Natural Birth focused classes, we still covered all possible interventions and their benefits and how to labor through them.  I wouldn't be surprised if the Medicated Birth focused classes covered Natural Birth techniques/pieces, too.  This class was wonderful for us and I feel so much more prepared going into labor and delivery.

    * Baby Basics - - This was the class that taught diapering, swaddling, bathing, etc.  We took it because DH has never even held a baby and thought it'd be beneficial to him.  Complete waste of time and money.  Had we known that we could have had the same instruction while in the hospital during our stay, we wouldn't have wasted our time.  Not to mention, DH had to learn how to diaper on my lap.  We were sitting in chairs...no tables or anything.  I'd find out what your hospital will teach you during your stay before taking a class like this.

    * Meet the Pediatrician - - This was a short class with the pediatrician we were given as a recommendation.  They offer a class once a month where you get to meet them and ask any and all questions you may have for them.  It was great for us because it confirmed to us that we definitely want this place as a pedi office.

Our hospital didn't offer a specified Breastfeeding class anywhere near us, but I would have taken that if I could.  I know I'll have access to Lactation Consultants during my stay and insurance will cover up to 6 visits.

  • Our hospital doesn't offer any classes so we signed up for a class at another hospital an hour away and it was a Saturday course that was supposed to be all encompassing BUT I got put on bed rest the Friday before the course and couldn't go.

I think both of those courses sound like a good idea :)

  • The hospital where we had Lucy did a 4 week (1 hr/week) class that had a different topic each time.  They covered breast feeding, pain management, basic newborn care (carseats and things), and did the tour.  I was very comfortable with babies and thought this was plenty for us.  It was just enough so I knew what to expect during labor and what was available to me at the hospital.

The new hospital has stuff like a Daddy Bootcamp (which I could never convince my H to go to) and a sibling class (which I don't think Lucy is old enough to really understand).

  • We are planning to take a childbirth class and a breast feeding class. I am going to ask my doctor tomorrow about it because they offer the childbirth class in March and May. With my being due in June, I don't know if May is too late to take it or not.

  • I only took the breastfeeding class and my mom went with me since DH had to work. I thought that was very beneficial to me even though I ended up having issues BF and stopped.

I did not take any other classes though. Personally, I researched everything that I wanted to do during delivery and just watched youtube videos, etc. of different scenarios. Also, my midwife was very helpful with a lot of my questions so I never second guessed myself.

lucky! I wish our classes were free.

I'm not even taking classes at our hospital, i've decided to do it at the birth center because I think i'll get better information for me out of them.

  • My dr said it's one of the few places he knows of that offers them for free!

This is awesome!  Our Prepared Childbirth class was $125!  (Totally worth it, though, IMO)  And we threw away $40 on the Baby Basics class.
