So...I may have just minorly flipped out on a colleague...::sigh::

At the elementary school I teach at, we have 30 minute block periods.  I am responsible for general music k-5 and orchestra/orchestra lessons 4/5. It's a nightmare.  There is NO transition time between blocks, and unfortunately, that means I have to run between two rooms and rely on the classroom teacher if there is a minute of overlap.  I know it's not fair to them, but there is NOTHING that I can do about it as we can't leave kids unattended.  I do the best I can but if I have 8 violins packing up I can't leave them.

So about an hour ago, at the end of the 10:30-11 block, this happened. I have 8 violins writing down their assignments and the next class for general music is walking down the hall.  I see the teacher and say they can go in and sit down, I'll be right there.  When other teachers do this, they send the class in and wait the minute for me to get there.  This one left.  She just effing left!  I'm flipping out internally because there are 26 8 year olds unattended but I can't leave.  Ugh!

Then, at the end of the period, which leads into my lunch and prep (each is 30 minutes, so I'm lucky they're back to back today, but it's not like this everyday), I open the door and line the kids up.  As I line them up, she's there, so I go over to the computer to do attendance.  And they're not leaving.  I ask the kids where their teacher is and they say she's not there?  Say what now?  It took her 8 minutes to get the kids out of the room and only because I went into the hall and said you need to get your kids - this is my lunch!  She said "you can leave, you don't have to stay."  First off, I'm not going to leave the kids when I don't know where you are, and second, this is MY room.  I have calls to make on my cell, which I can't do with the kids in the room.  It got snippy and I'm fucking pissed off.

Is it vacation yet?

Oh, and she's pregnant too - she's 24 weeks.

  • Ugh, thats the worst. I hate when teachers dont "get it." What if there was a fire alarm? What if a kid got sick/hurt? I know you get it..ugh!

I had a teacher like that too (i'm a music teacher as well) and tried speaking ton the teacher about it. After our convo, she started dropping kids off early and coming late. SO annoying.

  • I know how you feel. Elementary music schedules suck when it comes to having time between classes. I have teachers that are too lazy to walk their classes down to my room (I'm at the very end of the hallway) so they just send them down the hall. I guess they don't think to check to see if I am even in the room first.

  • My teacher aide volunteered to pick my kids up from specials everyday, but after a few times of them being "picked up" by another teacher show was dropping her kids off and then her sending them alone back to my room (from another building) I started picking them up myself. My aide got mad at me because I would beat her over there because she "was doing this to help so I didn't have to walk around so much when I was so pregnant" but I didn't want to inconvenience the specials teachers since she was late so many times and I really didn't want my 3rd graders walking between buildings alone. Some people are so irresponsible idk how they get jobs at schools.
