Buying our first home

I know this isn't the home buying board but I need to buy a home before we can TTC so I hang out here and ask you wonderful ladies my questions about life.

Those of you whom have worked with a realtor, whenever you put in the offer, or expressed interest in putting in an offer, did your Realtor's demeanor change?  Ours has become a PITA and I was wondering if this is normal.  Not a good, let me contact you with x, y, and z PITA, but a real biotch who is difficult to deal with and getting snippy with me.  Throatpunches will occur the next time I see her if she doesn't learn the words, "I'm sorry".

Re: Buying our first home

  • I'm sorry your realtor has turned out to be a PITA. We adored our realtor and she held our hand throughout the whole process and was very patient with us. A realtor's lifeblood is through referrals, so good ones absolutely shouldn't become difficult at any point, but unfortunately it's not unheard of.

It sucks that she's become this way after you've done your offer so it's really hard to back out. Good luck!

  • I guess I don't understand what you mean... Does she just have an attitude or is she failing to follow thru on what you want her to do? Seems weird that she would be doing either since her paycheck depends on whether or not you buy a home with her. If it's that stressful dealing with her this early in the game, I'd probably start looking at other options! GL!

  • Didn't you guys get your offer in/negotiated/approved? Or am I totally spacing and thinking of someone else?

If you're pretty much at the end of the process now, there's nothing you can really do. You've likely signed a contract to work with this realtor exclusively so she's guaranteed her commission for the work she put in finding homes to show you and filing the offers. I would just spread the word that go very belligerent with about x, y, z, and dissuade others from working with her.

If, however, you're just starting to look and you haven't signed on to continue working with her exclusively, you're perfectly able to say you're going to find a new realtor. Feel free to give her a reason (her attitude) or not; it's up to you.

Our realtor was fantastic, and we never hesitated to commit to her as our realtor until we found something and signed the closing papers. She never had an attitude, and if she felt we needed guidance (we were first-time buyers), she offered her opinion on anything we thought through out loud with her. But she never got snippy if we wanted to do our own thing.

  • @LuckyAngel07 - We did get our offer accepted on Friday. :) In the two weeks of negotiations, she was difficult to get a hold of and pretty much told my mother and I that we were stupid for asking to tell the sellers again that our best and final was truly our best and final. She talked over my mother and rolled her eyes at her and just frustrated me almost to tears. We told her we would not pay for the appliances and she came back saying that the sellers would never accept it. Well a week later, without us even asking, they accepted it. She has yet to apologize for being rude or wrong.

Scheduling inspections has been a bear and we also found out that our mortgage company has their own closing company that will save us $500. I asked to switch because the company she had suggested had only had our info for about 36 hours and she got angry and told me I could call and cancel it. Thanks for the help lady.

I guess I just wish she would be happy to help us and accommodating. She smiles and giggles when we're with her but after feeling so disrespected that day with my mom, I just see it all as fake.

I am counting down the days until closing, not only because we'll have our home and can start TTC, but also because we won't have to deal with her again.
  • ^^ yeah that's just unprofessional.

  • @FutureMrsWright2012 - it's everything from going back on her word about availability even though I have it in writing through emails, to not responding to certain questions, to not being detail oriented. She sent us an email after we told her our final number saying that she offered the sellers a different number. When I questioned it, she wrote back with a different number. The third time, she finally got it right to me and them. Very frustrating.
  • I'm not sure what state you are in but in PA realtors are regulated by the department of state, and you would be able to check on their website if there were other complaints of a similar nature against her. I'm not sure how much detail realty has on the site, though or if this kind of behavior would merit a formal complaint.

  • Wow... I'm sorry you've had that experience so far! What a jerk! It sucks that you're locked in with her and can't switch realtors now, but on the bright side... at least you're almost done with her! Is she independent or does she have a boss/group that she works with? I'd document (in detail) her attitude and words and submit it to them. If nothing else, you can definitely do a NON-recommendation with every person you encounter! Good luck wrapping everything up! I hope you're able to get everything settled and moved quickly so you can be done with her!

  • @rccola1981 - I will have to look into that because we are in PA.  We only met her by asking to see one of her listings and I was impressed that she didn't just email me back to say it was under contract.  She called, talked to me, asked what we were looking for, and wanted to set up a meeting.  I got the feeling that she was slightly over the top then, but in a 'I'm going to act WAY TOO friendly' type of way, not a 'I'm going to be a jerk'.  I'm just hoping to get through the next 7 weeks with minimal contact.

@RockABye - She works for a national company so I'm sure there is someone who will receive my letter after we are through.  My dad suggested calling to talk to her manager now and state that we are looking to file a complaint (but not really do it, just shake her up a bit) and chances are she will flip right around to being helpful.  My only issue with that is, I'm going to file the complaint, I'm not going to just shake her up.  I just don't want to create issues with closing, so I won't be filing it until afterwards.

Thanks for the support, ladies!  Hopefully 7 weeks flies by.

@simsk3887 Good luck, I think the link to it is fairly easy to find on the dos website, but I'm not sure because I always have DH do it because he actually works for dos...but not in realty directly so he wouldn't know many details on what merits a complaint. What area are you buying in?

  • @rccola1981 - Near Pittsburgh.  Are you nearby?
  • I'm near Harrisburg now, I went to school north of Pittsburgh though, so I have a number of friends out that direction.

Oh my! Sorry that you are dealing with this! Buying a house is stressful enough! I haven't read thru your other responses yet, but I hope you're able to fire her! GL chica!
