a problem with vivid dreaming

For a long time now I have had a problem with very vivid dreams every night and they are almost ALWAYS nightmares.

These dreams are so real. The dream will either be from first person perspective and I see everything as if I am in the dream or it is an almost aerial view where I am watching everything happen.

The dreams are so vivid that there are times I wake and have to wonder weather or not these things actually happened or if it was truly just a dream. I always wake feeling unrested and like I've been up all night.

The topics are bizzar and twisted and never seem to have anything to do with what is happening in my life. I've had dreams about witnessing murders and strange creatures and abuse. They are HORRIBLE!!

I am getting so frustrated with these dreams happening every night.

Do any of you have experience with dreams like these? Is there anything I cando about them?? II'm desperate and I need some rest!

Re: a problem with vivid dreaming

  • I have experienced that before as well, it can be so scary!!  I've had night terrors on and off throughout my life.  Sometimes what goes on in them is so grotesque or disturbing that I can't tell anyone out loud what they were, it's just too awful.

DO NOT take anything with Valerian root in it!!!!!  Certain relaxation teas (like Sleepytime Extra by Celestial) contain it, and it will relax you, but I always have night terrors when I take it.  Now, that said, I'm not sure how to stop them per se.  But at least you're not alone!  I hope that helps a little.

  • Ugh, I hate when I have dreams like that.  I'm sorry you're having to deal with them on a regular basis.  When I take Melatonin, I always have weird and crazy dreams and even though it does make me fall asleep, I don't rest well because of waking up from the dreams so I never take it anymore.  Maybe look at your diet and see if there's something you can eliminate that may be causing it, like caffeine or sweets.

  • Do you watch TV or read before you go to bed?  I've noticed if I watch or read true crime before bed I have dreams like this as well.

Here's a link about having dreams about murder: http://dreaminterpretation8.blogspot.com/2008/01/explaining-dream-of-murder.html
