edited February 2014 in Getting Pregnant

I finally got a call back from someone at my OB/GYN called me, and they now want to wait 3 months to start Clomid due to this thyroid issue.  I am so upset right now.  I don't understand why they did not tell me this when my initial bloodwork came up instead of telling me to call as soon as I received any information from my endocrinologist to start Clomid.  My endo yesterday said my labs were just slightly abnormal, and I am on the lowest dose of medication which she told me was safe for pregnancy.  My endo also encouraged me to begin fertility medication since it has been over a year/almost year and a half now.  My OB/GYN said that she also did not want me to start Clomid because she did not want to change medications for the next three months.  I provided all of this information to the lady from the OB/GYN office and she is supposed to get back to me.  Why can't everyone just be on the same page???  It doesn't help that I got on FB this morning and three people announced pregnancies on top of the "my little valentine" posts.  I'm leaving the office for some retail therapy before seeing one of my clients this afternoon.  I don't want to ugly cry in the office.

Sorry so long.  I just had to get this out, and DH is on training all day.

  • It is frustrating. I'm so sorry.
  • I'm so so sorry.  This sucks.  And honestly, I don't really understand the big deal your OB is making.  My RE put me on 25mcg of Synthroid, not because my Thyroid levels were low, but because "having Thyroid levels on the lower end of normal actually helps prevent miscarriage".  That was at the beginning of October 2012.  We had our first IUI, with Clomid, in December of that year.  The only reason we even waited until December for that is because DH and I held up on doing the IUI until my December cycle.  Our RE was all for it.

I don't get what your OB is doing and why he/she is making you wait.  This sucks.  I'm so sorry, @abt8113:(

  • i'm sorry. however, the first problem is that you're working with an OB. OB's aren't schooled in how to get you pregnant, though they know the basic fertility treatment (clomid). their job is to see you through your pregnancy and delivery. you should really move over to an RE. i suspect an RE wouldn't have any issues with the thyroid meds, especially since thyroid meds are pretty common and are necessary to stay on during pregnancy because it's possible your levels will fluctuate again and may end up needing a stronger dose while pregnant. OB's don't know enough of the in's and out's, so that's really what is going on here. get an appt with an RE and move on. i honestly wish i had moved on from an OB so much sooner than i did. it was a night and day difference and many others here will tell you the same.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with this frustration.

I do, however, agree with islandmonkey and CCH: if you can move to an RE, definitely do it. Starting fertility treatments with your OB isn't the ideal situation, especially if she wants you to wait even longer.

GL. I hope you guys can move forward sooner.

  • DH and I have talked about it, and have decided that we are going to seek out a RE. Any suggestions in how to do this or how to pick one? One of DH's coworkers and his wife saw a RE for their daughter, so we are going to ask them. Otherwise, I am completely lost on how to take this step. Any advice is welcomed!

  • A personal reference from someone you know is great. You could also ask your OB for a referral if you're comfortable doing that. Otherwise, check out the Physicians list on Resolve.org for ones in your area.

    Good luck!

  • I'm glad you're moving to the RE. I think it's a good decision. I would check out the SART website to see which clinic near you has the best success rate. That's something I didn't do (went to the one that was most convenient instead) and have some regret.

I second the ladies' advice about a personal reference if you can find one, and checking the site's they provided. Also check your insurance's list of providers. It will show you every doc who's in-network, which typically makes a huge difference in what you'll pay to see them.

GL. I hope you're able to find one soon.
