Cleaning baseboards and ceiling fans

How often do you clean these? I often forget and then they are pretty bad when I do it. Thanks!

Re: Cleaning baseboards and ceiling fans

  • Ceiling fans is rarely but I only have one, maybe once a year? And baseboards get a sweep every time I sweep the floors minimally once a week, but get a formal clean ever two months or so.

  • We have three ceiling fans, which I clean maybe 3-4x per year. Our ceilings are standard height, so it doesn't take much effort to wipe them down.  I just dust them with a rag, right before I vacuum/mop the floor.  I don't have a set schedule - I just clean them once I notice they are dusty.

The baseboards I do pretty often, maybe every 4-6 weeks.  Downstairs is mostly carpet, so I just use the vacuum brush attachment and it takes just a few minutes to do each room.  I don't do the upstairs as often, as it's mostly hardwood and doesn't seem to collect as much dust. Again, I just use the vaccuum attachment.

  • I ditto the vacuum attachment brush. Or, if that isn't an option for dusting, just one of those Swiffer cloths that attaches to the Swiffer floor handle. I just use one for dusting furniture/baseboards. If you want to actually wash them, I would use Murphy's Oil soap in warm water and a soft cloth. Just use enough liquid on the baseboards that they dry quickly and you don't have pools of water.
  • Great! Thanks everyone!

  • Well... we bought our house in March and I've yet to do either of these things. I guess I won't be winning any homemaking awards! :)
  • Haha! We moved in April. I did the fans in my house only because my DH said something about them! He has asthma and turning on the fans with dust bothers him. The baseboards on the other hand.... Well it hasn't been done yet.

  • I also have a suggestion. I clean my fans maybe 2/3 times a year, and my baseboards I clean about every 2 months. I have 2 dogs that are big shedders so our baseboards are noticably dirty when I do them. Using a vacuum attachment is good, I have done that, but also I have used dryer sheets.

Not new dryer sheets. I do laundry and use dryer sheets normally for my DH clothes so I always have used dryer sheets. I used to throw them away until someone told me about using them on my baseboards. Now as I do laundry throughout the month, I save all my used dryer sheets. Quick swipe along the baseboard and dirt, dust, and dog hair comes right up without any effort. I swear by this method. Also, I dont have to do them as often because it helps to prevent hair and dust from clinging for longer periods of time.

Now this is my own personal suggestion. It can take as long as you like but I have a 2200 sq ft house and im done in 5-7 mins with the whole house. :)

I clean our ceiling fan probably three times a year, however, I do not have a set method. Sometimes I stand on the bed with a dusting cloth, other times I use our Swiffer Duster, and I have also used dryer sheets.

As for baseboards, it depends on the room. I find the bathroom and laundry room baseboards, and the baseboards in the entry way get cleaned most often, and need it. Again, I don't have a set method for cleaning baseboards. About a year ago, I was introduced to cleaning baseboards with dryer sheets, and I have since used that many times. I'm glad to know that used dryer sheets work just as well - I have only used new ones up until now.

  • I'm trying to be better but fans typically get done when I notice the gray fuzz on the edges from the dust (gross I know). Baseboards, the ones I see, when the dust on it gets noticeable.
