vacation by owner rentals

We are officially going to Sanibel Island in Florida from June 29-July 9.  DH's friend is getting married there and he is shooting the wedding photos.  We are staying in a cottage the first 5 nights paid for by the friend and her husband.  I'm looking for a beach home for the remaining 4 nights for the 3 of us to stay in. Has anyone been to sanibel island or ft. myers fl?  Would you recommend any places that were affordable?

  • I've been there for the day but never stayed so I have no advice but just wanted to say have fun, it's gorgeous there! We are going to FL at the end of April and may end up going there again to visit the area :)
  • check out www.vrbo.com

One of my co-workers uses this site alot to find places to stay and they are all wonderful and he says the pictures of the homes he has gone to have all been accurate. He gets vacation homes 2-3 times a year from this site.

  • Thanks!  we haven't seen the ocean in 4 years and are more than ready!

  • I found this post that has the sources for house swapping or short-term renting etc. I have house swapped and it was great especially with a family to feed. The kitchen comes in very handy.
  • I recently rented out my home to vacationers using Air BnB.  I usually rent to permanent tenants but, long story short, it just worked out that my place was available a little bit before a huge festival within walking distance of my duplex was happening.

The folks I rented to (who were fabulous), said they use Air BnB all the time and...with one exception (not me, lol)...have always had a really good experience.

Not sure about Sanibel - but other parts of FL are very expensive.  It depends on how important true beach front is to you.  The house H and I stayed at this weekend rents for $6,500/week - it sleeps 12, so that's not terrible per person, but it's a crapton of money for one family.  We got to stay for free, but I was sort of taken aback by how much she can get for it.  It's consistently rented almost every weekend in the summer.  She has 0 trouble finding renters for that price.

That said... it's true beach front on Highway 30A (which is a thing).  It's also on a street of other houses - no condos.

I think the beach access (but not beach front) houses rent for significantly less... but still probably more than you are looking to spend.

Let us know what you find.  I'd be interested to hear how Sanibel prices out against the 30A communities.

  • We did find a place for 4 nights at about 1k.   That was within our budget.  With it just being the 3 of us, we didn't want a huge house with lots of rooms we wouldn't even use.  It's not right on the beach, but the beach is within walking distance.

The first 4 nights we are there we are staying at a place called Sanibel Inn.  I'm under the impression that its a community of beach cottages, resort like.  DH's friend is paying for our stay those nights because he will be taking photos of her wedding.  She is also paying for our airline tickets.

Staying at places like these are cool because we can cook our own breakfasts and dinner/lunch if we want to and that saves us even more money.  I'm not one of those people that likes to eat out 3 times a day while on vacation.
