NBR: Cold Remedies

What's your best cold remedy?  The worst offense of this cold for me is my voice. I'm going on 3 days of no voice.  What I do have takes so much effort to get out.  What's your best solution for that? I brought in some honey for tea, but that's about all that I can think of.  I do have Sudafed Severe Cold, but honestly the only thing really going on at this point is my voice and a bit of a cough, so I think that's a little overkill.  Last time I had no voice for nearly a week. I'm hoping to shorten it this time!

Re: NBR: Cold Remedies

  • I was going to recommend honey and lemon tea, but it sounds like you're already on top of that.  I hope you feel better soon!
  • cough drops or throat lozenges?

  • Mucinex and Airborne vitamins.  And lots of citrus juice!!!!

I'm also a fan of smelling salts, but they're not for everyone, and kind of make me feel like I need to sign up for a retirement condo.

  • We drink hot lemon water or hot honey water, both with brown sugar and cinnamon. It really helps us.
Other than that just lots of vitamins and OJ!
  • My dad always gave us a tablespoonful of honey and lemon juice when we were kids if we had a scratchy throat or cough.  I still use it.  :)  It coats the throat.

I also do a spoonful of honey and cinnamon a few times a day when I feel a cold coming on.  I swear it reduces the symptoms.

  • For the sore throat, I make drink that's 1 cup boiled water, a pinch of cinnamon, and then add a tbsp or so of apple cider vinegar, honey and lemon juice. Really helps sooth a raw throat. You can add more honey to sweeten it up if the lemon are vinegar are overpowering.

I swear by oil of oregano for colds as well. It doesn't help with symptoms per se, but it will help kick the virus.

  • MIL is a nurse and she recommended this one to me.  Crush a Vitamin C tablet (the swallow kind, not the chewables) mix it with a few teaspoons of water (just enough to make it drinkable, but thick enough to coat your throat) and drink it.  It tastes absolutely disgusting, but it helps so much.  She also recommends sucking on a Vitamin C to coat your throat, but I found that it burned the inside of my mouth.

  • Sushi-load up on the wasabi. Clears the sinuses wonderfully. For the list voice? No idea but wine can't hurt :)

  • I swear by Zicam, but you have to start taking at the slightest feeling of getting sick.  I haven't been sick this season.
  • Whenever I have a cold I usually resort to my grandmother's remedy. It's kind of hilarious but it's always helped me. For a cough she always gave us a shot of Rock 'n Rye whiskey with honey. Then lots of Vitamin C and tea with honey and lemon during the rest of the day.

Yes, even when we were kids. Lol. I don't suggest it when driving afterward.

  • Buckwheat honey! That stuff is amazing. According to my MD, Buckwheat honey is much more effective than the other types of honey.

Ha! Truth! Wasabi peas would do the trick too!

  • Salt water gargles. As warm and salty as you can tolerate. I agree with PP that the honey should be buckwheat and unpasteurized so you get all the benefit of the pollen.
Feel better! Hopefully your singing voice is back in no time :)

  • Ditto salt water gargles and honey/lemon tea.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I drink a TON TON TON of water, and a few Emergen-C packets a day. I use my steam vapor machine a few times a day and sleep with my humidifier on. I also do the honey/lemon tablespoons a few times a day.
