I started the PCOS diet last week, so I've been buying pretty much all organic foods. I'm amazed at how much better the fruits and veggies taste!! Even H, who thinks organic is just another way of getting more money out of you, has to agree that they all taste better. I just bought some blackberries, which I am not usually a fan of, for H and they were amazing! I don't think I'll ever go back to buying non organic fruits and veggies.

What do you all think? Is organic worth it or do you think it's over-hyped?

  • Worth it! (as I sip my organic hot cocoa)
The price difference was a shocker, but we just cut out a date night each month. The veggies are SO much better, and I can't get enough of organic pears. I try to buy organic whenever I can. Our grocery has a whole line of organic foods, so we buy that until Whole Foods opens.

  • And...As we are unexplained, I am very suspicious of the stuff that's in our foods. We try to shop local farm stands in the summer and fall. I don't know what is causing us to have trouble conceiving, so I am trying to gain control over something (or so my therapist says).

  • 100% worth it. I buy organic wherever I can. Organic (grass fed, hormone free, etc) meats are so much better!! I figure, why put unnecessary chemicals into my body when there's an alternative? And they really just do taste better.

We buy organic 98% of the time on everything. In fact, we just signed up for an organic veggie co-op. I pick up our first box this week! Back when we ate meat, we'd get grass fed organic beef and OMGOSH.. it was amazing. SO much better.

T-TTC since Dec 2008. PCOS/nonexistant cycles(anovulation) and endo. HSG in '10 revealed both tubes blocked. Lap surgery in Dec '10 to correct. Failed Clomid/IUI and injectable(Bravelle)/IUI cycles so far.

  • Another vote for totally worth it! For the same reasons as PPs have stated. Anytime someone mentions how much more expensive it is or I get sticker shock I tell them/remind myself it's an investment in our health. Medical bills are more expensive than buying organic.

  • A vote for overpriced marketing ploy here!

  • I think it is overpriced and not really better for you.  I can't taste a difference in store bought normal produce vs store bought organic produce.  I do think local produce tastes better and enjoy supporting local farmers.

Yes! I'm all about buying from local markets, etc.  But, I won't buy organic in the store.

  • I have been getting a weekly organic and local when available fruit and veg bin delivered to my home for the last year and a half and I find the price and quality 100% worth it. It forces us to eat seasonally, I spend less on produce than I did when shopping in stores, and the taste is not comparable. I do have to pop in to the store for specific ingredients and produce on a weekly basis, but my meal planning is based around our bin. I love it, and feel good knowing we are supporting organic farming with the hope that prices will lower with demand.

  • I'm a little bit in the middle. We try to eat organic meat/milk and produce from the dirty dozen. We also get a weekly box of local produce and it is super yummy. Other stuff I don't worry about as much. I used to try and eat all organic but have been a bit more lax since stopping TTC.

  • This is actually one of the topics Alton Brown covered in his live show.

According to him, it is more important to eat locally and nationally than organic.

We have always done meat & milk organic, and we try to hit the top 10 on the organic list (foods with porous skins, etc).

We had a farm share last spring/summer and loved it. It was hard to find an organic farm share, but we found one that was open and honest about their growing practices so we chose them.

To me Organic is a hype.

We buy our meat in bulk from local farmers, grow our own produce in the summer (or buy from local farmers) and freeze/can it for winter, and make most things from scratch.  So to me what we're doing is as "organic" as I feel is necessary.

My dad is a farmer (who uses chemicals) and my brother owns his own crop spraying business (mixing the chemicals and applying them to the crops to ward of pests and get higher yields).  So for me, I know and understand the importance to some chemicals being put on mass produced quanities. However, I still buy from small local farmers because I know they use less products on their crops than the larger nationally known corporations.

Free range cracks me up.  I grew up on a pig farm.  Just the thought of having to round up the pigs at the end of the day makes laugh.  Granted our pigs had plenty of space and 2 separate sections to roam around in.  So they weren't all crammed into the large feedlots you see now.  Hence why my dad no longer raises them.  It just isn't profitable for the little guy anymore.

If someone wants free range, then go hunt for wild animals.
