WIAR: Losing It (ns)

I picked this one up at the used bookstore and was interested in reading it. It made piles of money and was super popular, and I heard it was one of the better self-pub turned traditionally pub New Adult books out there. It sounded right up my alley.

UGH this book annoys me so much! I wanted to DNF it, but it's so short that I figure I might as well finish it. But a 250-ish page book should NOT take me like 5 nights to read. It's such a slog because I hate both of the characters and pretty much everything they do annoys me.

I have yet to read a NA that I like more than "meh" (although, Season, I haven't read yours yet, so there is hope for me yet! :-) ) I feel like so many of them are the same, and I just really dislike the characters.

Did anyone else read this? It has so many 4* and 5*reviews on GR.

  • I was going to pick this one up, but now I'm scared. Honestly, I've read quite a few popular NA books that I just didn't get the appeal. I feel like there is a general lack of character development and plots seem rushed and/or predictable. I read them, but don't rate them on my GR because every writers' conference I've been to says not to openly judge other books in your genre for fear of backlash. I'm not bashing my genre by any means, because there are some gems in there. I can honestly say I have NO IDEA what readers are looking for these days.
I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

  • I think I gave it 3*, it was just okay.  For me it was a quick read, I think I read it in a couple of days because it's so short.

But I'm all for DNF if you don't like it.  There are too many books out there to waste time on something you already know you don't like.

I only gave this one 2 stars.  @Skeezon, I totally agree with your comments above. I love this genre though and read a ton of NA books. This one just wasn't it for me though. The lack of character development drives me nuts. I hate when books just jump into the storyline and I don't know crap about the characters.

  • I want more NA books like Fangirl. Though I'm not even sure if that's widely considered NA since it doesn't fit with the mold of most of the NA out there.

All of my RWA ladies have been passing around and raving about Sophie Jordan's Foreplay since someone got it at our Christmas exchange.

  • Well, don't take it off your TBR just from my review! There are so many 4* and 5* reviews on GR!

  • The reviews in this genre scare me overall.  They're glowing love-ey 5-star reviews by 'professional' reviewers -- the ones who get the book for review and make shiny reviews with gifs and bells and whistles.  And those reviews just seem like they're not to be trusted.

I thought the same thing. I thought that if people took that much time to put together images and write such glowing reviews, there must be some kind of motive or maybe they were family/friends of the author. But, I've gotten quite a few of those and I didn't know any of them. I think it comes down to a very dedicated, passionate fan base and maybe a desire for people to make entries shiny so others will follow their reviews on GR.

This is what I meant by 'professional' - not that they're getting paid or anything.  I imagine some are book bloggers who may make some revenue off of ads, but I want to take away the suggestion that there's a devious (or monetary) reason for giving 5-star reviews.

Lol, I was already on the fence about this one. I only have a few GR friends who have read it and they all also rated it very low.
