So, after Sunday's temp FF took away my dashed crosshairs, and it's another long cycle (CD 45 today). Either I haven't ovulated yet, or I'm not going to ovulate and get AF in a couple days... last cycle ended at CD 47.

I feel conflicted... one part of me is saying that it's too soon to call the doctor after only two weird cycles and I should wait another cycle or two to either let myself even out again or to get more data. The other part has been freaking out since my crosshairs got taken away. I know I'm totally the type to jump the gun at this kind of thing, so... yeah. Please tell me how silly I'm being.

Re: I need to be told I'm being silly

  • There is no reason to wait to call the doctor if there is an 'obvious' problem. ie. your charting and haven't confirmed ovulation over a few months. They may tell you to just wait it out but I would still call.

Take a deep breath. I don't remember how long you've been trying, but if you've only had one other cycle, you definitely need to take a breather and chill out some. It can take awhile for your body to get on track and if you are ovulating, even late, you still may be just fine. Some gals just have longer cycles and it can easily take a few months to get to a regular rhythm.

Rule of thumb is to wait 1 year to call the doc unless you're over 35 or have a known issue. If you don't get a period after 60-90 days, then call your doc to get provera to induce AF. Even then, I don't think it's necessarily time to call the doc and go in for testing.  Either way, you definitely don't need to freak out and worry yet. Don't borrow trouble until you know there's an issue. Give it some more time.

ETA - this is coming from someone who's had basically non-existent cycles since 2008 so I've had these conversations with the OB and the RE.

  • I don't know all your background issues, so I'm just going to share what happened with my BFF.  She was on the pill because of irregular periods for a few years, then went off when she and her husband wanted to conceive.  She was charting her temperature for a few months and noticed that she wasn't ovulating, so she called her doctor.  It was the right move, because she wouldn't have gotten pregnant on her own.  So if you have a known issue with regularity, I say give the doctor a call.  If not, and you've only been off your birth control for a few months, I'd say give it one or two more goes before calling the doc.
  • How many months have you been trying?  I stalked your posts and read it's been 6 cycles, but if it's been 6 long cycles then that's a little different in months.

Also, is this your first cycle charting?

The first four cycles we've been trying were all average length - #4 went a little long by two or three days.  Cycle five was 47 days, this one is on CD 46 so far.  This is my first cycle fully charting; I had started in the middle of the last long cycle.  May - June was my last full round of BCP.

Also (and I don't know if this really matters) but before I went on BCP in 2009 I had weird cycles too, but it was more that I had a lot of intra cycle bleeding so sometimes I would think I got my period then a couple weeks later it would be nope, wait, this is totally my period, aaaand repeat.

You're definitely overreacting. People can have wacky cycles here and there. If 4 out of the last 6 cycles have been normal and you've only had two longer ones, maybe you're just stressed or there was a change in diet/exercise/whatever. Again, don't borrow trouble if you don't have to. I'd kill for 40-50 day cycles. Give it a few more cycles of charting consistently and if you notice that you're not ovulating, or go more than 60-90 days without a period, then call the doc.

  • I would definitely give it some more time then.  If 4 out of the 6 cycles were pretty normal, then it's nothing to get overly concerned about.  Continue charting though because that will at least give you a good sense on whether or not you are ovulating.  In your case I would still use the 12 months rule unless your cycles start getting to 60+days.

Also RAB has a good point.  Any changes in diet, exercise, or extra stressors can affect your cycles.
