from ML but more of a MM issue

edited February 2014 in Money Matters
Hi MM,

I've posted about this in ML, but I think I'll get more help here.

My H is a little worker bee, and has been since we met.  It has been his goal to find one full-time job that will meet our needs without having to change the lifestyle we have come to enjoy.

H accrued a lot of debt in the 2.5-3 years he attended college (he got no help from my in-laws, they refused to co-sign any loans with him, or help him understand what all that debt meant) basically H ended up with around 60K in student loans and I think about 24K in Credit card debt.  We have paid the CC debt down to 3K in the past 2.5 years and have made dents in both of our SL debt (I graduated with about 20K in student loans that's now around 12K).

We have been able to purchase a house, we own my car out-right and recently purchased a certified-preowned car after we were spending tons of money each month to keep H's car running.

So far I'd say we've been doing pretty well balancing our monthly budget, minimizing wants (no cable, H has a dumb phone, I need a smart phone to function at work, so we have a small data plan, minimal eating out, $350-400 on groceries each month, we haven't taken a vacation in 4 years)

All H has been able to find without a bachelor's degree is part time work, for the past 4 years he has consistently worked 2-3 part time jobs (averaging 60-70 hours a week) (I work full-time, I have a small PT job, and I'm working on a masters degree part-time...paid for by my full-time job).  Recently H lost his smaller part-time job, so he is now down to one part-time job that is 25-30 hours a week, and he has been struggling to find something else. his PT job is from 3am-8 or 9am T-Sa, so his availability for something else is excellent.

this month we had some unfortunate timing with several things...our propane tank went empty at the beginning of the month ($900), I was in a fender bender but had to get the car fixed ($500 deductible) our gym membership was due (pretty much the only thing we splurged on $500).  I am praying that we have a good sized tax return so I can payoff that last bit of credit card debt (we've been agressive that reduces our monthly "needs" by $700)

He is currently checking local classifieds and helpwanted websites, monster.com, and the 3 largest employers in our area...is there someplace he's missing? Unfortunately we've had to dip into our e-fund this month, and will be about $1000 short next month (it's in the e-fund, but it is really hard to think about dipping in there again). His current PT job does not have any full time available, there's a FT position opening up soon 90 minutes from our house...but any extra money earned there would pretty much be spent on gas.

We have taken some risks with our money, but I feel like they've been for smart reasons, most were with the advice of our FA. (purchased a house well below what we were pre-approved for at a low interest rate, purchased a nice car, but it was pre-owned...)  I'm beginning to feel like everything we've worked so hard for could slip away so easily.

  • I should also note that the aformentioned gym membership was paid for before H lost his job. and that in December we booked a vacation for June so far we've purchased non-refundable airline tickets and the remaining cost of the trip ($1200) is due at the beginning of May...this wasn't going to be a problem until H lost his job.

  • if it helps my thoughts to help with our short-term (hopefully) problem are:

    1. the propane tank was just filled, that should get us to august or september, so that $150 could be used elsewhere
    2. technically my student loans ($256) are in defferment because I'm in school I could hold off paying those (and pour myself a glass of wine and deal with the fact that interest is accruing)
    3. I'm already trying to cut groceries to <$300 a month...we're both athletes and eat A LOT, so this could be hard.
    4. take the bus to work on the days I don't have to go back and forth to school (might save $40 in gas)

I'm sad, a bunch of my GFs are going to hang out at a local brewery on saturday while a good friend is here from out of town, I just had to bail on them :(

  • Your take-home income is similar to ours. I know you mentioned in a previous thread that you didn't think you'd qualify for IBR on your H's SLs, but based on what you posted here I think you might (esp once your loans enter repayment too). You could also switch to a 20-year payment plan. There's no penalty to still pay $700 when you can, but lower payments give you flexibility when things are tight.

I agree that I don't see too much to trim. It's just a high housing/car cost without the second job. What I'd do in the short term is cut all extra payments until your e-fund is where you want it to be. An exception is the CC if you'll have to pay back interest if it's not paid off during the promotional period.

In the long term, is there any way to trade a car for one with gas mileage that would make the FT job worth it? I know you mentioned your car has good mileage to start. Also, a small- potatoes idea, but you might be able to get slightly lower car insurance if your records are good.

Good luck to you H with the job hunt. Fingers crossed!
  • Thanks @Xstatic3333, I will check on the IBR to see if we can qualify.

I have called and chatted with the credit card company in the past, I was worried about a back-interest situation, we won't owe any back interest (phew) and I was able to get them to lower the interest rate a bit, so when interest does kick in it's not as bad (15.99% APR).

H drives the car that gets better milege (we own this car outright), in the summer it gets 36+ mpg highway. The other car is our Subaru, which in northern new england is sometimes the only reason we get places in the winter. that's the other thing, if H took this other job that is 90 minutes away he'd be leaving the house at 1:30am and getting home around 2 or 3 pm...he'd barely have time to sleep, and in the winter that could be a nightmare more often than it's not. His boss thinks it's an option, but I really can't see us making that one work.

The other piece is that while my job pays for my masters degree, I have to pay taxes on the grant they give me, that get deducted from my paycheck...I graduate in June, so as of July I should have another ~$400 to take home each month.

So part of this is literally surviving the next 4 months without doing too much damage to our e-fund...obviously H would like to be working more than 25 hours a week, so beyond July having that income would make it easy to pay down SLs etc.

  • Oh, and I've tried to get our insurance lowered, H has 2 at-fault accidents in his 5-year driving history...so this is as low as it's going to go for now.  I've already checked with them, my recent fender-bender qualifies for accident forgiveness because I have an otherwise clean driving history

  • Can he check the workforce center locally?  Can he temp anywhere?
  • I'm not sure our community has a workforce center, I'll have to look into that. He did get offered an on call job delivering furniture, however it was unclear how often they would need him and it's paid under the table, I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that.

  • How much more does he need to complete his college degree?
Would he be interested in the trades? (becoming a plumber, electrician, welder?)
He needs a skill that will make him employable at a higher wage.
  • I would stop paying on your student loan in deferment until the credit card is paid off. Apply what you were paying to the deferred student loan to the credit card to get the higher interest loan paid off first.
  • @Sisugal, he's trying to find out. there is a local community college/trade school that will transfer most of his credits, he is still waiting to hear how many courses he needs to take for their BS in business/management, their tuition is low enough that he would get reimbursed for pretty much all of it. Unfortunately H is NOT handy, I do a lot of the jobs around the house, or hire someone who can.  he tried to fix the kitchen sink and ended up making it worse.

@sillygoosegirl we had a payment plan in place to get the CC paid before the 0% interest promotional period ends.  unfortunately with this new cash-flow issue even if I don't pay the loans that are in deferment (which I'm not planning to until H finds a new job) We don't have the cash to continue paying down that credit card on the plan we had...we're meating with our FA tomorrow to see how we did on taxes this past year, I'm hoping that with my tuition, the high taxes on the house, etc, that we might get a large enough return to payoff the credit card and eliminate that $700 from our monthly needs until H gets another job and we can snowball it into our SLs.

H worked a ton of overtime leading up to Christmas, I'm hoping that means taxes were withheld in a higher income bracket and that might contribute to a higher return.

  • OK semi WOOHOO update! we got enough of a tax return to pay-off the CC!!! and there's enough left to put some aside to cover the dog's spay in March.

This means H can open his job search more widely because he doesn't need to be bringing in as much to cover the credit card. EEEK *Small sigh of releif*

  • @Xstatic3333 H checked with Sallie Mae, they handle private loans, therefore the is no such thing as IBR. Again, wishing there had been someone to educate H on SLs and debt 10 years ago :/

at least with the tax return allowing us to pay off the CC I'll only have to pull a few hundred from savings this month opposed to $1000+ last month.

Gotcha. It was worth a shot. Sallie Mae does some federal and some private, so it gets confusing. Totally agree that there needs to be better education about how loans work.

Glad you were able to pay off that CC! Congrats!
  • ...so still waiting for the tax return to automatically deposit in our account...anyone else wait more than 3 weeks to see their return?

  • If your husband has facebook, have him like businesses that he likes or is interested in working for. Also include any local police dept & cities. Sometimes places will post job openings on facebook & just their own websites.

Also have him post on facebook, that he is currently looking for either part time or full time work if anyone is aware of anything. A friend of mine did that and one of his facebook friends (someone he doesn't talk to face to face regularly) told him about a job at the company he worked for, my friend found a new job in about 2-3 weeks. The networking really helped him. Plus no one is going to go, apply where I work even though I hate it here.

    Good luck!!

  • Thanks, I'll have him do that.  His dad is an officer in the town next to ours, so he has his feelers out there, right now none of the departments are hiring (and Fire departments are all volunteer here).

He has a second interview today fro a job he's a really good fit for...fingers and toes crossed that goes well.  I think he's already been on facebook, but I'll have him post again.  He's also been working on networking through linkedIn.

I'm so sorry. Roommates sounds like a good way to get some quick relief!
  • Thanks, as of yesterday he has 4 interviews scheduled in the next week. he also applied to a position that he's more than qualified for that they're looking to fill for 4 weeks by monday...so that may be a good temp-thing to help us get by until he can find something more perminant.

    Thanks!

We've got a temp-roommate lined-up for mid-may through mid-august, even if H has found a job by then it'll help replace what we've taken out of the E-Fund. I'm feeling a little better moving forward. we got our Tax return and took care of the last of the CC debt (WOOHOO) and filing our taxes this year our CPA realized that my tuition from last year had been taxed so she's refiling to get us a few thousand back from 2012 (!!!) so we should still be able to meet some of our goals for the year:

    1. install several raised garden beds so we can enjoy home grown veggies (my friends an I went in on a Fedco order together in February so I'm glad I'll have a place to put those seeds!)
    2. pay for a good portion of our new roof in cash (snow finally melted from some of the shingles this week and they're a little wavy...must be done this year).
