  • The afternoon is going slow for me so help me learn more about Pittsburgh.  Recommend--
    1. a favorite restaurant:
We love breakfast at DeLuca's in the Strip District (there's one in Robinson Township as well now)

    2. a favorite annual event
Ribfest at Heinz Field. It's Labor Day weekend and we try to go when a local band we enjoy is playing.

    3. a favorite fun place to go
I'm so blanking on this right now. We've enjoyed any of the museums we've gone to.

    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me)
Honestly just getting out and doing stuff. But this winter has been particularly rough, so I'm even to the point of blah. My dad also just moved here from the south and has had a hard time as well - hang in there!!

    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do
Take the incline to the top of Mt Washington and enjoy the view:)

    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help!
Missy at Studio Raw, hands down. Absolutely adore her!

Anything else you think I might need to know!
  • Fun!  Welcome to the 'burgh!  I promise not all winters are like this, this has been brutal, even to us natives!

    1. a favorite restaurant  Fat Heads in the Southside, Mad Mex (a few locations)
    2. a favorite annual event hmmm.....I haven't been for a few years, but I enjoyed walking around Arts Fest when I worked downtown.  I think it usually takes place in June.  Were you here for the giant rubber ducky?  I don't think he will be back, but he was amazing.
    3. a favorite fun place to go  The zoo is great.  Last year, we met up with some friends at Latitude 40 in Robinson...restaurant/arcade/bowling alley...it was a fun night out!
    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me)  I don't really, I just hibernate.  Seriously, I am the laziest winter person ever. My husband loves to ski (and takes my 6 year old with him) so they have been LOVING this winter! You could take up skiing!
    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do  The incline!  It doesn't matter how many times I've been up there, the view of the city from the top is just breathtaking.
    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help!  Never had my hair colored there, but I get it cut at Studio Raw in the North Hills, love it there!

  • Yes, I saw the duckie, I adored him!  My understanding is that he was made for Pittsburgh and is in storage here, but there was some type of contract about his appearance, maybe he will come back soon!

  • Gwen-that's 2 votes for Studio Raw, they should pay us some type of referral/free advertising fee!  They could just pay me out of their cupcake/wine stash, too, that would be ok.

Haha - I agree! Especially on being paid from their cupcake/wine stash, mmmmmm. I went in January and they had salted caramel pretzel cupcakes. SO awesome!
  • 1. a favorite restaurant  Monterey Bay on Mt. Washington
    2. a favorite annual event  I like the Arts Festival
    3. a favorite fun place to go  We go to the zoo a lot, I love our museum, the Andy Warhol.
    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me) I like to ice skate, so I try to get out and do that a few times.  It's especially awesome at PPG at Christmas with the tree.
    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do See a baseball game at PNC Park.
    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help!  I color my own, so I am no help!
  • Recommend--
    1. a favorite restaurant: Recently I've enjoyed Nola and Tamari.  There are some newer restaurants in the downtown area that I haven't had a chance to check out yet. (Grit & Grace, etc.)

    2. a favorite annual event I love it when the furry convention comes to town, even if it's just to furry watch.  I also love all of the fall festivals that go on at local farms in Sept/October.

    3. a favorite fun place to go Any of the museums, Warhol, etc. In nicer weather any of the trails around town, kayaking, etc.  Market Square has a public art exhibit going on at night right now - that might be fun to check out and grab dinner/drinks while you're there.

    4. how you beat the winter blahs This is an awful winter!  I just try to find projects around the house to keep me busy, get a pedicure in a fun color, etc.

    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do: Definitely the incline!  A Pirate/Steeler/Penguin game.

    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help! Another vote for Missy at Studio Raw!

  • 1. a favorite restaurant: in your neighborhood, we love Max's Allegheny Tavern. It is one of the things I miss about living over there.

    2. a favorite annual event: definitely the Furries. This year is over 4th of July. I may or may not have liked Anthrocon's FB page for details

    3. a favorite fun place to go:museums, walk around Oakland, the Aviary and Zoo (we don't have kids).

    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me) This winter is awful, I shop! :P But seriously, get a mani/pedi, go to the movies.

    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do The incline for sure. Go to the musuems, explore local neighborhoods.

    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help!

A lot!  Download the No Wait App...you can't go wrong with any of the local places they have.  My current favorite breakfast place is Waffles Inc.  I go to the Southside location.
    2. a favorite annual event
Summer park activities.  We try to catch some of the free movies in the park at Schenley Park and free concerts at Schenley Plaza in Oakland each year.  They also have the Vintage Grand Prix in Oakland every summer.
    3. a favorite fun place to go
Concerts at Stage AE, Penguins games at Consol
    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me)
We went bowling with a group of friends.  Arsenal lanes was full so we had to find another place.  BYOB bowling is actually a thing in Pittsburgh so we looked for one of those and found it in in Crafton Ingram.  About $10 a person and we each brought our own cooler or bottle!
    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do
    Gateway clipper cruise
    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help!
    Sorry, can't help you there.

Anything else you think I might need to know!

  • 1. a favorite restaurant. DH and I love Casbah, Burgatory, Tamari, Umi, Cure, Piccolo Forno, and Meat & Potatoes. We want to try Butcher and the Rye, but haven't made it yet.

    2. a favorite annual event. We love the Arts Festival, the Festival of Firsts, and the Vintage Grand Prix.

    3. a favorite fun place to go. I love the Zoo, and went often even before we had kids. I also like taking the occasional walk/bike ride on the trails. You should be close to one. You could walk it and take a detour to Red Fin Blues :)

    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me)  I'm not a winter person, but I try my best to keep busy and get out even if the weather is gloomy/cold/snowy. I love seeing theater in the city.

    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do. We took our out of town relatives on a Ducky Tour. I liked it so much more than I thought I would. It was a great time.

    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help! I haven't dyed my hair, so I'm no help.

  • Some of mine will be repeats, but I wrote my list before I read the other responses. :-)

    1. My favorites are Sonoma Grill, Six Penn Kitchen, Plum and Mad Mex.

    2. Arts Festival in June and all of the neighborhood house tours in spring and fall. We also usually go to one of the local farms in the fall for pumpkins and apples.

    3. Pirates game, the zoo, the Carnegie Museums

    4. Trips to Phipps, going bowling and enjoying a good weekend snow by making a snowman and then having hot chocolate.

    5. Take the incline up to Mt. Washington - both during the day and at night!

    6. Can't help with this one. I haven't gotten highlights in 8 years. Though now I wish Studio Raw was a shorter drive from my house!

  • 1. a favorite restaurant- many of my favorites have been mentioned already, but I will add Dish which is in the south side, and Nikki's Thai Kitchen which should be pretty close to you!
    2. a favorite annual event - Sharp edge in the east end does an annual european beer fest. We go with friends every year and while I usually get a designated driver pass it is a great time for my husband.
    3. a favorite fun place to go - The strip district on a saturday morning.
    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me)- I agree with the others, this winter has been the worst.  Generally we get more breaks between storms or brutally cold days. This year our snow fall is like double and I would assume we are below average in temps too.  I did better last year, when I was able to run outside more.  Just the half our in the day being outside really did wonders for coping with February.  I saw my tulips poking from the ground on Saturday when I was out in the yard. That is helpful.
    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do - Not in the city, but close enough.  I would suggest taking a trip up to see Falling Water, Ohio Pyle, Kentuck Knob.
    6. a great colorist--my hair needs help! I have my hair done at Sognatore which is in town, I really love the staff, and it is convenient to work.  I don't get my hair colored much though. I could probably start though.  Becoming more and more grey... blah!

    2. a favorite annual event - Arts Festival, Ribfest, St. Pat's parade

    3. a favorite fun place to go - The strip district on weekend mornings.

    4. how you beat the winter blahs (I moved here from Texas and winter is starting to get to me) - Phipps Conservatory, Museums, although I'm really lazy in the winter.

    5. something in Pittsburgh that I MUST do - Hmm, not sure. Kennywood in the summer, if you like old-time amusement parks.

Well, if we're talking about a girl's afternoon out then I'll drive anywhere! Just tell me where and when. Maybe it's time to get highlights again. ;-)

  • Our next appointment is in April...I'll have to check with Michelle, she keeps the schedule for me.  But you should really try to join us, we always try to schedule them at the same time, it's a lot of fun! Studio Raw always has cupcakes and most importantly, a full bar.

How much do I love that Michelle is your salon concierge! :-) I just had a cut this weekend, so I will be due in April...

  • Thanks for all the great ideas some I have done and some are new! There is so much great food in the city, I can't wait to try some of the places we haven't found. And if you have not tried Smoke BBQ Tacos in Homestead (they are moving to Lawrenceville) run don't walk. Don't skip the mac & cheese! She is from Texas and married a Pittsburgh guy. The tortillas are home made and the meat is slow cooked like in Texas. A really great hipster taco, that feeds my Texas soul,
