Kids clothes (selling) etc.

So DH and I are about to have LO #2. We will have one child of each gender which makes all the clothes I saved from LO not useable. I purged about 10 bins of stuff and donated/gave to friends about 1/2 of what I had. I kept the rest of the bins with the intention of selling them. I am trying to decide if I should do a yard sale or consignment. Any suggestions?

Re: Kids clothes (selling) etc.

  • I tend to be lazy, I would take them to Once Upon a Child and let them give me store credit so that I can buy outfits for the new LO.
  • I tried a yard sale and it was a total bust.. I've been selling at kids resales and have had success. Consignmentmommies.com is a good place to look for sales in your area. You usually have to volunteer to work a shift in order to sell.
  • I'd suggest Mom 2 Mom sales or a consignment shop if you don't want to do a yard sale. We have a non-chain consignment shops and a Once Upon A Child very close by. Hands down I LOVE the non-chain one so much better.

If you know someone else who needs to purge kids stuff, I'd team up for a joint yard sale or share a table at a Mom 2 Mom sale.

  • I've had huge success on Craigslist. Once I find a nice buyer, they usually love my idea of me emailing them directly in the future when I have more stuff available. I had one lady buying for 4 years. I give a great deal such as a large bag for $30 but it may have 45 items in it. It's still the best bet for me.
  • I would sell on craigslist for sure.  we have lots of success on it and make more money selling on craigslist than a garage sale.  You can sell in lots of the clothing sizes (3-6months, 6-12 months, etc.)

  • I've only been buying so far, not selling but one other place I would consider would be beg, barter, buy and sell pages on facebook- see if your city has one. Search BBBS _______- to see if they have any. Some will even have kids pages, you can list on there and meet people in a public place to sell. You may get more through a site like this.

  • Check to see if there are any local B/S/T groups on facebook.  I've had success selling there.
  • I've sold a lot of our kids clothes on buy sell groups on Facebook and our local Just Between Friends consignment sale.

  • For me personally, a consignment store is the way to go.  I don't have the time or interest in organizing a yard sale, and my impression from talking to others is that non-clothing kid items (strollers, cribs, etc.) usually sell more quickly and for more money than clothes.  I also like getting a credit at the consignment store since that's where we tend to buy clothes and other items for our kids.  It may not maximize our return, but we have gotten 100s of dollars in credit over the years and it's by far the easiest way to get rid of it all.

I usually go one of two routes after I let a friend use our clothes. I either sell them to a local store so I can use the credit for more in the new size, or I sell them on local Facebook buy/sell/trade groups or Craigslist.
