Dog's favorite treats?

When we go out our dog obediently gets into her room (laundry room) and is enticed by a treat.  When I brought home some milkbones she moved a little slow.  I switched back to her favorites and there was a huge spring in her step...she couldn't get that treat fast enough!  Her favorites are Beneful Baked Delights Snackers (they look like peapods, apples, etc.), Beggin Strips, and the Target brand Boots and Barkley little hot dogs.  She will also go crazy for a carrot.

If I have a coupon or Giant Eagle has a good sale I usually get the Beneful or Beggin Strips there.  If not the Target Boots and Barkley are under $2 a bag so I will get a few of those.

What treats does your dog love?  Where do you find them at a good price?

Well, at our house, they get Milkbones. I started with them with our first dog and when we had three at #75, #90, #125 the cheaper the better. They all like them so that is what we stuck to. None of our dogs ever did well with "soft" treats, especially the bulldog and boston terrier but even our lab. We actually have always given them veggies too: carrots, mushrooms, potatoes. My friend's dog loves brussel sprouts.

Now at grandma's house they get the good stuff. My parents super picky goldendoodle gets chicken (which isn't really that much more expensive, my mom just cooks a big batch and then cuts it up once a week). But she also feeds Freshpet Select Dog Joy Chicken Treats. My lab loved the Dog Joy Sweet Potato Treats, the American Bulldog yeah not so much. Now, my Boston Terrier loves Dingo Twist Sticks which he knows where my mom stores them and will annoy her until she gives him one. He always gets a couple to take home too. I am too cheap to buy them so I call the Grandma Treats.

  • Our dog gets milk bones for going into his crate.  We don't do a lot of treats because he will gain weight pretty quickly if we aren't careful.  We do occasionally get treats from the doggy buffet at Pet Co.  He LOVES apples slices, and would do just about anything for one.

  • Deuce has food allergies, so we're hesitant to give treats.  For his treat he get a cow hoof to gnaw on.  If anyone has some recommendations for good treats for a dog with food allergies/sensitive stomach I'd love to hear them.

I'm not sure what his exact allergies are, but once we found he did well on vension/pea or bison/pea food we stuck with that.

  • We give our dog with more sensitive teeth Cesar Softies treats and she loves them (the milkbones hurt her teeth, so it was pointless giving them to her as she'd just sit and stare at it til the other dog found it). They're less than $4 for a decent size bag at Target. Our boy pup gets either milkbones or dentasticks, both of which are big hits.

Does he tolerate sweet potatoes? The treats I mentioned above are basically dehydrated sweet potato slices. I know someone made them at home in their dehydrator and they were basically the same thing. Our dogs love veggies, so that may work too.

  • I will give our guys veggies, when I am cooking. but for store bought treats I have only been buying the natural balance venison/sweetpotato biscuits. Like Deuce, my Mo has some food allergies and he is ok on venison so I am not willing to stray from that now that his tummy is under control.

Those natural balance logs are pretty great for training (cut them into pieces).  We don't give many treats though.

Oh- and coffee. Mo stole my coffee this morning. I think that is likely among his favorite treats cause he has done it before... jerk :)
  • Amanda, I can't believe Mo wants coffee. Hahaha.

Charlie likes bully sticks and bull hooves for chewing. I give him Charlee Bear dog treats as a reward. They are only 3 calories each and made with liver. I buy them at Trader Joe's.

  • If I'm feeling super nice, I get chicken livers and put them in the food dehydrator over night.  makes the house stink but at least I know what's in them and they are cheap as all get out.
